5.0 out of 5 stars Predator, April 7, 2010

This review is from: In Her Prime: The Murder of a Political Star (Paperback)
I had read another version of this book and wanted to read this version.
I was impressed with the detail covered by the author and enjoyed reading the book.
It clearly showed Chaz Higgs to be a predator.
I have no doubt whatsoever that he had something to do with her former husbands death.
If you like real crime mysteries this book, you will definately enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Run For Glenn Puit, November 12, 2009
By
This review is from: In Her Prime: The Murder of a Political Star (Paperback)
Glenn Puit has once again hit a home run with his latest true crime novel, 'In Her Prime.' I was recently given another one of his books by a friend titled, 'Fire in the Desert' and was hooked by his writing style immediately. I couldn't wait to read anything else he had written. I got much more than I bargained for with, 'In Her Prime.' Glenn has a fantastic way of making you feel like you are truly along for the ride. By the time I was finished reading 'In Her Prime' I felt like I was personally involved with everyone surrounding this tragic event. I can't imagine how tough it must be for Glenn to try and stay neutral during his investigative research while penning this book and dealing with Kathy Augustine's friends and family. He somehow pulls it off in an extremely interesting and very detailed way. I felt like I was fireside listening to him speak and tell the story himself. His writing style is again, magnificent. Kathy Augustine's murder was huge news in Vegas and Glenn Puit really does this unfortunate event the justice it deserves. Great job Glenn Puit!!! I can't wait to read his title 'Father of the Year.' That will be my next book for sure. I would highly recommend, 'In Her Prime' to anyone!!

I loved this book, especially since I live in Nevada and had seen the media surrounding Augustine's political life and unexpected death. The book has details that you don't get in the news media so it was very informative. I'm looking for more Puit books to read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another hit, November 9, 2009
By

This review is from: In Her Prime: The Murder of a Political Star (Paperback)
In Her Prime is another home run for master story teller and prolific author Glenn Puit.

It's a true crime tale with a victim whose uncanny knack for politics is equal to her skill at choosing the wrong kind of man.

Puit details her story with his usual journalistic eye for detail, his attention to chilling moments and his empathy for the victims, their families and loss to the community that these kinds of crimes cause.

The scene is Los Vegas, where all four of Puit's books take place and where he spent many years as a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun.

Puit chronicles the rise of Kathy Augustine's political career and her brush with a White House appointment, her involvement in a political scandal and her mysterious death.

He describes the political intrigue that gets Augustine elected to her role as a public servant and the precipice from which she falls when her political enemies accuse her of wrongdoing. At the same time her husband dies a questionable death and she quickly remarries the man who was her husband's nurse.

After she suddenly dies, a witnesses' recollection of a statement her husband made to a fellow nurse is impetus for police to investigate her death as a homicide.

But it's not an easy case to prove.

Puit's description of how scientists are able to apply a unique test to search for evidence of a drug is one of the best explanations of forensic technique in true crime literature.

Of course, in the end, a jury decides who actually did what to whom and Puit doesn't disappoint with his coverage of defense and prosecution cases.

This book, like the others, is true crime reporting at its best: descriptive, but not tedious; analytical, but not overly; dramatic and empathetic. His books are a voice for victims and for the investigators who both face the worst human nature has to offer.
