Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With its conventional plot and cookie-cutter protagonists, Robins's Regency-era debut doesn't break any new ground, but fans of romance-cum-espionage adventures will take pleasure in the characters' easy banter and daring escapades. James Morgan, a duke who is now spying for the Crown, finds himself in a quandary after he mistakes sweet, charitable Charlotte Hastings for a traitorous thief intent on financing Napoleon's restoration to power. James intends to wring a confession from Charlotte during a weekend party, but when he is caught in her room, he claims she's his betrothed in order to save her reputation. Believing James may be a traitor, Charlotte initially refuses to go along with his charade, so he kidnaps her and endures several groin injuries before the avuncular General Cumseby, a friend to both, sets the matter to rights. Though the two no longer suspect one another, they still have their pretend betrothal, which proves useful as they join forces to ferret out the real villain. James and Charlotte spend as much time working together as they do arguing, but their silent caring for one another shines through even when they're at odds. Neither a humorous romp nor a saga, this will appeal to readers who enjoy steely heroes and strong-willed heroines who give as good as they get.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ESCAPE!!, December 3, 2002
By
"kat-girl" (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Her Scandalous Intentions (Mass Market Paperback)
If you're looking for a fun, adventurous love story, I highly recommend this book. A flawed hero and heroine have to wrestle their personal demons while wrangling with the pesky issue of staying alive. Charlotte, generous but naive, never seems to completely fit in with the crowd. She's at a house party in the country when she wanders out and happens upon the dangerous hero, James, in a suspicious rendez-vous. James, meanwhile, an English spy, is hard pressed to believe the coincidence. That night, Charlotte's attacked in her room. James comes to her rescue, only to have the two of them discovered in a seemingly uncompromising position. What follows is a sham engagement that's as heated as their arguements. They secretly try to prove the other's guilt, all the while falling in love. Good, strong characters, unexpected plot twists and a heroine that's not afraid to defend herself. Great suspense. Great read!

2.0 out of 5 stars I was expecting better, February 16, 2004
This review is from: Her Scandalous Intentions (Mass Market Paperback)
I have to agree with another reviewer about how this book has so much going on that the romance between the two main characters is overshadowed. I didn't like the way they even interacted with each other. I normally like it when the hero and heroine don't get along right off and then realize that they really love each other but these two just annoyed me. I wish I could rate this higher but I just can't. Hopefully her next book will be better.
