5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun from Jill Shalvis, December 13, 2005

This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
Mia Appleby is more than satisfied with where she is in life. She has a great paying job, a beautiful home, and she's states away from her mother, her sister, and the trailer home life that she grew up in. After waking up in bed with her gorgeous neighbor, Kevin McNight following a night of toe-curling passion, she can't believe that he's offended that it was nothing more to her than a one night stand, or was it? Mia finds herself thinking about Kevin a good deal of the time.

Mia is determined to remain as far as possible from life as she knew it growing up. Kevin thinks that Mia is shallow and self-centered and when her niece Hope, who has run away from home, comes to stay with Mia he can't believe that the two of them are total strangers to each other, which only reinforces his negative thoughts of her. Mia has no idea how to handle her troubled niece, and is thankful that Kevin, being a high school teacher, understands the workings of the teenage mind. Kevin understands much more than that, he also knows all too well how to unleash Mia's every passion and the two of them can hardly keep their hands off of each other. Kevin is also dealing with a troubled family member, his deaf brother has no self-esteem thanks to their abusive father and Kevin is trying to help him get on the right track, repeatedly having to get him out of trouble.

Mia needs Kevin and Hope needs Mia much more than either is willing to admit. Kevin wants to be there for Mia but convincing her that he wants more than a few quick interludes might prove to be his most difficult endeavor. The relationship between Mia and Hope is excellently written. They both have been deprived of the most basic shows of affection or love, and watching their relationship mesh is heartwarming to say the least. Experiencing Kevin's attempts at breaching Mia's self-protecting walls is a real delight.

Jill Shalvis captures human emotion as few authors can. She pulls you into a book from the beginning and can frustrate you because you can't read fast enough. This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves a sensual romance laced with humor and lighthearted fun as well as an intriguing relationship study. I recommend this book and suggest that you do yourself a favor and order it immediately. I would give it 6 stars if possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars From a trailer park to the LA Hills, August 14, 2006
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
Mia Appleby has shunned her humble beginnings and has transformed herself from a Tennessee trailer park to a near mansion in the LA hills. She is a shark of an ad exec and exhibits the same behavior in the bedroom - she has never met a man she wants to bed more than once. And then she sleeps with neighbor Kevin... Her orderly world is thrown into chaos as she finds herself wanting more than a night with Kevin, but not able to make any promises beyond that. Further adding a kink to her armor is the arrival of her niece Hope, a surly Goth teen who reminds Mia of herself.

Kevin is a sexy Harley-riding high school science teacher. He supports his ne'er do well half-brother Michael who has permanent hearing loss as a result of a beating buy his father. He knows that in order for Michael to spread his wings he needs to let him fend for himself, but guilt traps him in the never-ending cycle. Kevin in intrigued by Mia, who he thinks is shallow, and finds that all she seems to want from him is nightly stud service. He is amazed that Hope and Mia have never met in person. In a switch from most romance plots, it is the gal with the commitment issues instead of the guy, who is the nurturing one.

As Mia discovers that her sister Sugar is looking for a vacation from parenthood and has no intention of coming to get her daughter, Mia leans on Kevin more and more to help her cope with a role she was not cut out for. Can Hope and Kevin break down the walls that Mia has erected before it's too late?

This is my first Shalvis book and won't be the last. From the witty repartee and sensuality between Mia and Kevin to the dialog via sign language between Kevin and Michael, the story is engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sexy Read Indeed, February 5, 2006
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
This book was very fast-paced, sexy, and fun. The book is a romance, and the main characters are well-rounded and interesting. Mia Appleby is a tough as nails woman with a shameful past, and Kevin McKnight is her sexy neighbor - a man who teachers troubled youth during the day and rides his motorbike at night. In a romantic twist, the female (Mia) is the one who is reluctant to love; while Kevin wears his heart on his sleeve for Mia, she remains dispassionate towards him - despite enjoying his body nightly. The chemistry between the Mia and Kevin is HOT and even the introduction of a teenager into their lives doesn't dampen their love life. This book will make you a happy reader for a few hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Hit by Jill Shalvis, December 12, 2005
By
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
I give this book 4 1/2 stars. It was Ms. Shalvis' best book thus far. The dialogue was fantastic - witty but hitting the nail right on the head.

Kevin is such a sexy hunk that you can't resist him and want to jump his bones as much as Mia does. Mia comes from a poor background and somewhat dysfunctional family. She leaves home at an early age to make something of herself. She does very well at her career & having the best of everything and keeps thinking achieving one more thing and she will be happy. She meets Kevin and there is instant chemistry. She only wants sex from him and keeps coming back for it.(They live next door to each other.) Kevin wants more but finds it hard to turn Mia down. Mia is afraid to commit or trust anyone.

Between Kevin, Mia's only close friend, Tess and Mia's 16 year old neice (who comes from same background as Mia did) arrives at her doorstep, Mia realizes she CAN trust and love. Secondary plot and characters add to this great story.

The cover is great too; I am a sucker for a story about the hero on a motorcycle. Run out and get this book. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars It woule be a "Mistake" to miss this one, December 6, 2005
By
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
I'm always saying that Jill Shalvis can't top her latest publication and she constantly proves me wrong. With each subsequent book she exceeds all expectations and her growth has been a wonder to watch. "Her Sexiest Mistake" is a triumph of human emotion, humor and love. Some books aim for the proverbial funny bone with all of the subtlety of a sledge hammer, but Ms. Shalvis' humor is honest, real - the kind that we live with and experience everyday. It's not just thrown in for levity sake, but to reveal layers of her characters personalities. And layers they have an abundance of. This is not just a book about romantic love, but the love between siblings, an aunt and niece, and friends. Mia came from a poor background, determined to make something of herself - and along the way she closed herself off from those around her. Kevin wants to fix everything and everyone to assuage the guilt he feels about not being able to protect his brother from an abusive father. Hope escapes the same squalid life as her Aunt Mia and yearns for acceptance and love. These three main characters, yes three, make up the meat and bones of this story. Ms. Shalvis moves effortlessly from laughter to tears with grace and insight. "Her Sexiest Mistake" is a must read, not only for the reader, but for anyone aspiring to write themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't make a mistake by reading this..., December 15, 2005
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
I've read Blue Flame and Seeing Red by Jill Shalvis and enjoyed them so much I had to pick this one up and was not disappointed.

I enjoyed all the characters, especially the main characters Mia and Kevin, and their relatives, niece Hope, and Kevin's brother, Mike.

Mia is self-centered, embarassed of her white-trash upbringing, and very sucessful in advertising. She's also addicted to sex, the kind that comes with no strings attached. She doesn't want to be anything like her trashy mother nd sister, yet like them she can't say no to sex. You can move the trash out the trailer, but not the trashy way from the girl, apparently.

Kevin is a science teacher in summer school, who also runs a teen center. He feels guilt over not protecting his brother from an abusive father when they were younger, leading to Mike being deaf. I enjoyed the sign languaging between them, by the way. He also seems to have a habit of trying to fix everyone and everything as a way of redemption of allowing such fate upon his kid brother. But he learns with Mia that you can't fix everyone.

Kevin moves into Mia's neighborhood in the sunny town of LA, and she into his bed within the first week of them meeting. She comes over and borrows sex from him instead of sugar or milk like some neighbors do, lol, and he can't seem to say no to her, even when he claims the next time he will.

Kevin wants more from Mia besides sex, but Mia's not used to having seconds with any man, so why can't she stay away from Kevin?

Enter Hope, her niece from a town she wants to forget she ever lived and her life's one big mess, or is it?

Read and find out. Watching Mike mature before my eyes was an added bonus, and Mia finally facing her past and a niece she never had contact with before was enjoyable. I couldn't put this book down.

This is the third book by Miss Shalvis I've enjoyed and if she keeps up this great writing, won't be my last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't pass this book up., December 12, 2005

Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
Her Sexiest Mistake by Jill Shalvis is all out sexy, fun and a delight to read.

Mia Appleby is living the life she has always wanted. She has an awesome job and a great home in the right neighborhood. She has left her trailer park life behind her, or so she thinks. One look at her motorcycle riding neighbor and Mia is in over her head.

Kevin McNight has had the most incredible night of his life with Mia. He sees more to Mia then what she lets others see about herself. Kevin tries his best to make this relationship to be more then a series of one-night stands.

Kevin and Mia each have their own issues to deal with outside of their explosive chemistry. Kevin is trying to get his younger brother to take life seriously. Mia has the niece she has never met drop into her life bringing all those trailer park memories come running back.

Her Sexiest Mistake is an exceptional book. Kevin and Mia's relationship may start out as purely physical but it evolves into something worth fighting for. Ms. Shalvis weaves an emotional and deeply satisfying tale that keeps you enthralled till the very end.

4.0 out of 5 stars fine contemporary romance, December 6, 2005
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
The first chance Mia Appleby got to scorch her roots she took as she wanted no ties to the trailer where she, her older sister and her mom shared one small living quarter. In Los Angeles she likes her job and her lifestyle insuring no one gets close to her; men appreciate her love them and leave them philosophy. She is content until she sleeps with her new neighbor Kevin McKnight who demands more from her than just a one night or two flings.

While she struggles with the pressure Kevin exerts on her, Mia's past arrives in Los Angeles. Her sixteen years old niece Hope, whom she never met, has arrived looking to escape just like Mia once did. Unable to cope Mia turns to Kevin for help, which he willingly gives as he wants his reluctant neighbor in his life for the rest of his life.

Though a subplot involving betrayal at work seems to add unnecessary angst to a person already over the edge with a traitorous heart and a relative in need, readers will appreciate this strong modern day character study. Mia keeps the tale focused without it turning into a soap opera. She is amiable but aloof until Kevin and Hope begin to push her buttons, which warm up her heart (and other body parts or at lest when he touches her). No mistake this is a fine contemporary romance with deep characters struggling with radical change.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great hot read, December 28, 2005
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
Jill Shalvis is one of the best authors of contempory romances. Her Sexiest Mistake is hot and a great read. Mia is a single girl with a great job and turning her life around since coming from living in a trailer park. She shares an incredible night with Kevin the next door neighbor and wants no strings attached, but Kevin the biker hottie wants more. The books shows how a man like Kevin can turn an independent, strong woman like Mia to change her views. Get the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good, October 27, 2006
By
mahikahn (Columbus, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Her Sexiest Mistake (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
I recently read Jill Shalvis's "Get a Clue" which was very good. In "Her Sexiest Mistake" none of the characters, with the exception of Hope, were very sympathetic.

Mia Appleby grew up in a raggedy mobile home with a sister and mother whose main goal was getting a man to take care of them. Mia escaped from Tennessee to L.A., went to college and became a very successful ad exec. She has an expensive car, hired a decorator for her lavish house and wears nothing but designer clothes. This is a woman who wears high heeled mules when she gets out of the shower!

Kevin is her new neighbor. To Mia, with his motorcycle and laid back appearance he's the typical "bad boy". In reality, he's a science teacher who runs a teen center. He's a caring man who feels it's his resiblity to try to "fix" other peoples lives, in a good way, especially his brother Mike.

Mike was beaten by Kevin's stepfather when Mike was a toddler and Kevin was five and as a result is now deaf. Mike uses Kevin's guilt to get anything he wants. He lives with Kevin, takes his money, doesn't work, is always getting drunk, goes through women like Kleenex, and Kevin has had to bail him out of jail.

Hope is Mia's 16 year old niece, whom Mia has never even tried to see. Hope does what Mia did. She escapes from Tennessee to L.A. and goes to her idol Aunt "Apple's" house.

Mia is frantic to get rid of Hope and makes it clear to Hope, repeatedly, that she is not welcome there. She doesn't want anyone to know she even has a niece since she won't talk about her past at all. Mia is all about status. She's self involved, shallow, self righteous and has no empathy for anyone but herself. When Hope shows up after driving across country in a beat up car, Mia's main concern is that Hope's putting scuff marks on her precious floor! And somehow, even though she feels she comes from "trailer trash", she's a first class snob.

The night before Hope showed up Mia spent the night at Kevin's house, in his bed. But she doesn't want any relationship with him. Maybe she should have thought about that before she "did" her neighbor. In spite of this she keeps showing up at his house for sex. "Let me in so you can do me." Sometimes she doesn't get further than inside the door and is all over him. As soon as they're finished she gets up, gets dressed and walks out. She is a complete user, doesn't care about the effects her behavior has on anyone else and at times is downright cruel.

In all fairness though Kevin lets her, and Mike, get away with using him no matter how badly it hurts him. I'm not sure why he even wants her as there doesn't seem to be any attraction other than physical. Mia's type of behavior is no more acceptable with a woman than it is with a man.

Midway through the book I didn't care what happened to any of them.
