Biography

Anita O'Day, American jazz singer, was born in 1919. She pushed the envelope, wearing coats and skirts instead of evening gowns, becoming a hip female musician.

She was born Anita Belle Colton, and renamed herself O'Day, pig latin for "dough" or money. She also earned the nickname "The Jezebel of Jazz" due to her ongoing problems with heroin and alcohol addiction and erratic behavior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from ASV, November 11, 2002
This review is from: And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine (Audio CD)
Like many "serious" jazz singers, bop vocalist Anita O'Day apprenticed as a big band singer back in the swing era... This generously programmed collection gathers 25 tunes from her early years working with Gene Krupa, Stan Kenton, Will Bradley and others... At first she sounds undistinctive, just another songbird who couldn't hit the golden tones of Helen Forrest or Ella Fitzgerald. Then, as time passes and her records get more daring, O'Day's unique voice emerges, including the harder tones and hornlike bursts that set her apart from the pop vocals crowd. This is a great set for anyone interested in her early years.

As usual, Joe 6 pack hits the nail on the head, but before buying this album, check out the 4 CD box set, Young Anita, which pretty much covers everything here plus a staggering amount more, and all for just a few extra dollars.

2.0 out of 5 stars low-budget knockoff, July 18, 2010
Warning: track 4, whose actual title is "Deep in Blue" has a vocal by Irene Daye, not Anita O'Day. I suspect the producers did not actually listen to their product.

Anita O'Day is fabulous. Music lovers who want her 1940s stuff would be better off buying Sony/Columbia/Legacy's "Let Me Off Uptown: The Best Of Anita O'Day" Let Me Off Uptown: The Best of Anita O'Day with Gene Krupa or Proper's comprehensive box set "Young Anita" Young Anita.

Then after you become addicted to her voice, try Avid's "Four Classic Albums" Four Classic Albums, from the 1950s. All three of these collections are well produced, terrific bargains, and available from Amazon as of July 2010.

A wonderful biographical documentary DVD with bonus disk of performances is "Anita O'Day - The Life Of A Jazz Singer" Anita O'Day - The Life Of A Jazz Singer.
