Lightnin' at his most rockin',
By Tim Weber (Iowa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Herald Recordings - 1954 (Audio CD)
He's rarely credited with it, but Lightnin' Hopkins' raucous 1954 instrumental "Hopkins' Sky Hop" was reasonably close to being the earliest rock 'n' roll record. While this CD is certainly blues - and of a high order - Lightnin' is definitely at his sweatiest and rawest here, cranking out several up-tempo numbers with a drummer chasing him. Don't get the wrong idea, though; there's plenty of Lightnin's fine slow country blues, including "Sick Feelin' Blues", "My Baby's Gone" and "Sittin' Down Thinkin'". As usual for the Collectables label, there's no liner information whatsoever and sound is merely OK. But the music is quite good. Note that Collectables also produced a second "Herald Recordings" disc which, in a shameful move, reproduces five of the cuts from Vol. 1, four with different titles!

We Will Never Have This Again,
By Gleet (Oak Park, Il) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Herald Recordings - 1954 (Audio CD)
I bought this yesterday after buying a couple of old Hopkins Lps (and, yes, the old albums ALWAYS sound better than a CD, no humble opinion about it)...this music is earth shattering to me, the nature of it is so primal and real...this is the kind of stuff that could wipe out a whole American Idol audience with just 12 bars...and the guitar sound on it...how is this man not have a statue somewhere (maybe he does in Iraq)...it is such a grievous affair to think about the state of music in this country(which is, sadly, a huge feedbag for the rest of the world for some reason) and to compare it to just this one example of Lightnin' Hopkins talent...this is the equivalent of the lost arc of the covenant, I mean this type of music and energy, if America ever finds it we wouldn't know what to do with it...They would have an easier time marketing the arc, I'm sure...don't read this, listen to the damn thing already...
