A fantastic reference,
By Steven Proctor (New Haven, CT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heraldry : Sources, Symbols and Meaning (Hardcover)
I've owned this book for years, to the point where I really have to consider buying a new copy, my old one is so worn. It is an excellent resource for anyone beginning a study of heraldry, containing a good overview of the history of the subject, and how the practice of heraldry developed over the centuries. The artwork included ranges from very simple early pieces to some fantastically baroque examples, and gives a nice sence of the progression of heraldic art. It's not a deep and in depth book, but it's really one of the best quick reference/beginning student books on the subject available.

If you are a fan of history and historical novels like me, there will be times when you need to think about heraldry - what do the symbols mean, how is it that the family crests were made, what did they mean to the men as they went into battle? Sometimes you just need a good reference book to have a look at to answer those questions.Well, this is the book! It is certainly not the best and most scholarly work available on the subject, but it is an accessible reference which will answer most of the types of questions that I have posed above. And it is a handsome book as well, full of colour and great illustrations. For a history buff, this is a great addition to your reference library.
