Herb Alpert "Live" At Last!,

This review is from: Herb Alpert - Live at Montreux 1996 (DVD)
Finally, a glimpse of what Herb Alpert sounds like in a concert setting. This was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July of 1996, the 30th Anniversary of the Jazz Fest. Joined by keyboardist Jeff Lorber, trumpeter Alpert displays his funk-jazz side and holds his own quite well. This is not the Tijuana Brass by any means, so the TJB fans may not get into this, even though the band goes through a funky version of "Lonely Bull" and a jazz version of "Taste of Honey". One of the big highlights is sax/flute/keyboard man Gary Meek, who is a perfect foil for Alpert's trumpet. Herb even encourages Meek to engage in a few cat-and-mouse riffs. It's my guess most people have never heard Herb Alpert in this kind of setting, so be prepared to be shocked. While the majority of this set is in a funky setting, the DVD closes with a gorgeous version of "This Guy's In Love With You", done with Herb and guitarist Tony Maiden (of Rufus fame). There are some humorous moments throughout as well. A definite keeper!
Incidentally, this sounds even better with the DTS Surround sound. Great sound and picture!

Very positive to find JUST ONE Herb Alpert's DVD, but I think maybe could be possible to produce more Herb Alpert videos, no hope finding it for the TJB era, so those "modern" videos who I remember saw it years ago in the earlies 80's, specially for the "Fandango" promotional videos (Fandango and Route 101 for example), also some cutting edges about the "Bullish" album (Where are all of there??? Only God knows).
For the rest, Bravo Maestro, you are giving a magnificent gift to all of your loyal fans, but we deserve some more of your better times and great music.

A gentle set from a gentleman that bears up to repeating viewings,
This review is from: Herb Alpert - Live at Montreux 1996 (DVD)
Okay, so maybe you DON'T want to hear "Spanish Flea" ever again (though the audience enjoyed Alpert breaking into it spontaneously, then trying to remember the rest). But even Miles Davis admitted Alpert is a trumpeter's trumpeter. This set is what smooth jazz tries to do and rarely achieves - highly skilled play you can listen to again, and again, and again.
For the Hollywood tycoon that he is, Alpert comes across as one of the gentlest of gentlemen, but doesn't rest on his laurels and still shows his chops. With an ensemble of Jeff Lorber's players (unfortunately including a drummer who appears to have never heard the famous drum lines in "A Taste of Honey"), Alpert appears dazzled by Montreaux, pleased with his sidemen, startled by the jubilant audience reception and only really at ease when he's playing. Wonderful stuff that you'll play again and again. Don't miss this one.

I'm enjoying this DVD playing in the background while I'm working, and I enjoying watching the visuals as well. As previous reviewers have indicated, there is some great jazz on this DVD, wonderful musicians, and a lot to like about the DVD. My parents (92 and 77) really enjoyed this, too.
All I could add would be to ask for more. Those TJB TV specials, other video efforts by Herb Alpert; all would be very warmly welcomed. We can only hope that the re-release of the TJB albums leads to more CDs and DVDs of this remarkable musician, who for over four decades has been making his own way in music.

One of the best live performance I've seen in years . Herb Alpert is enjoying himself and having fun. Having Jeff Lober & Band as a back up, how can you go wrong ?

I was just cruising around Amazon and found out that ol' Herb finally put out a DVD and in concert to boot. Well, I have been waiting for some time to see herb in action. I haven't seen him in action since he performed with the TJB in 1984 promoting their Bullish album on the Grammy's. I know this is a pre review, but what can I say? I will get this DVD and love it! I certainly hope he puts out more videos. LONG OVERDUE, HERB!
