Book Description

Garden-fresh herbs impart flavor and fragrance that dried, packaged products simply can’t. Now, anyone with access to a few square yards of soil (or even a sunny patio or windowsill) can enjoy the punch and pungency that only come from fresh herbs, hand-picked from the garden. Herb Gardening from the Ground Up demonstrates how to design, seed, and nurture 38 culinary herb gardens that are delightful to the eye as well the palate.
Designed to supply herbs for a wide range of flavors as well as a pleasing balance of colors, there are gardens to suit every taste and cooking trend, including a French chef’s repertoire, an Italian trattoria’s menu, the aromatic seasonings of Asia, the closer-to-home flavors of American barbecue, and the piquant profiles for a Tex-Mex feast. There are herbs for flavoring fish and game, soups and salads, bread and other baked goods, and, for the mixologists among us, even herbs for the home cocktail bar.
Herb Gardening from the Ground Up offers historical insight, provides starting-from-scratch, season-to-season basics for planting in the present, and looks forward to the bright future of urban and suburban growing trends.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can tell that Sal loves herbs January 13, 2012
If there is anyone I would want an herb growing book from, it's Sal Gilbertie. First, he's had over 40 years to test his methods. He was the third generation of herb growers. Second, he can write and is both funny and factual. Third, he's tried every way to grow and after experimenting and testing, he uses what works. If I have a question about growing herbs, he's the one I go to.

So I was thrilled when I received a review copy of Herb Gardening from the Ground Up. This is an updated version of what I thought was the best growing book, Herb Gardening at its Best. This book is filled with detailed information on growing 15 of the top culinary herbs, including problems you may encounter from starting the seed or cutting through year 3. Most books sort of cover a general growing but few go into each year. One reason this is so great is the plants change from year 1 to 3.

The second part of the book are garden plans. This was always my favorite part. The plans range from a Fish and Game Garden so that you'll have the best herbs for seasoning that fish you caught to a Tex-Mex plan to a Home Bar Garden. This is one book you won't want a Kindle version of. My old version was so beaten up for using, I started going through this one right away. If you're trying to decide what book to get, this is one you'll keep forever. Highly recommended.

What a great book...... I have always wanted to grow the vibrant herbs that look like those on the cover of the gardening magazines. Gilbertie's book gave me all the clear, valuable, guidelines that I needed to guarantee my growing success. I have been trying for years to have a flourishing year round garden and have gathered bits and pieces of the success puzzle from multiple sources. This book was the first that have I found to contain all of the pieces of the success puzzle! Great Job! And what a great gift for all my friends and relatives.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book July 15, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have built an herb bed/raised next to my patio so that I can access fresh herbs for cooking easier and also enjoy the plants visually. I know some things but this book really helped me with the soil requirements for what I wanted to grow; different depending on your selections. Also helped with designing the planting. They offer many plans for folks like me making new gardens so if you like to get ideas for planting combinations, this book is for you. Liked the size for reading. Brought it with me to the nursery when I shopped for plants.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+ For Newbie to Seasoned!! August 20, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A wonderful book. So informative, even for a novice like me. So much good information, whether you're a seasoned gardener or a newbie to the hobby. Written in a flowing manner, easy to understand, lots of pictures and diagrams. The history of Gilbertie's Herb Gardens is fascinating, too. It prompted me to go visit the place in Westport, CT. A wonderful place to visit. Their herbs are beautiful and the staff are so friendly and helpful. If you are even a bit interested in starting an herb garden, this is a must book to add to your library! ~ Happily growing herbs on a tiny little plot in Upstate NY.
