This review is from: The Herb of Grace (Mass Market Paperback)
Although this is the middle book of a wonderful trilogy, it stands on it's own. A lovely post war story, telling the tale about 10 years later. It paints post war life in England in a warm glow (all of E Goudge's books tend to have a warmth and kindness about them) and it tells the story from Sally's eyes. Her romance with David Eliot is woven into the family tale, and in my opinion, it's the best of the three books.I actually read this first, then got drawn into the whole trilogy by the excellent writing and character portrayals. I've read and re read this trilogy over the years whenever I've felt a little tired or depressed. It never fails to give me a renewed enjoyment of life. It affirms all that is positive in the human spirit. Things aren't resolved in a sticky sweet manner, they are partly resolved, like real life. Complete with conflicting emotions, and compromises, this isn't a sickly sweet romance but an exploration of people's lives. Love it. |
