About the Author

Madonna Compton has degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice and an MA in Religious Studies. She is a symbolic artist, poet and teacher in the San Francisco Bay area. She has also worked with prisoners, halfway-house clients, and as a drug counselor. Her bliss, however, is writing, although a close competitor is watching seeds grow into plants which then metamorphose into herbs and incense compounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Serious Herbal Student, December 7, 2003
By
This review is from: Herbal Gold: Healing Alternatives (Paperback)
This book offers a diversity of information usually not offered in traditional herbals. This is not just a book of factual information, although that is something that is sufficiently provided. It also offers much of the history, lore, and legend surrounding the wide variety of theraputic and widely used herbs of our time. This was the book that first introduced me to the theory behind the Doctrine of Signatures, and this concept fascinated me. What I also enjoyed were the extensive chapters on various theraputic plants, such as Pycnogenol and Grapeseed Extract, both of which promise to be strong preventative agents, the popularity of which has soared in the last few years. This look not only was the source of my inspiration to pursue a career in alternative medicine, it provides priceless wisdom about the problems and deficiencies within current standard practice for dealing with illness. It offers insight about how individuals can go about recaliming their right to manage their own health. It truly helps one to develop a new perspective about what wellness really means.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Guide, May 4, 2000
This review is from: Herbal Gold: Healing Alternatives (Paperback)
This is a very comprehensive guide that offers several things:1)descriptions of a broad range of herbs, their properties, and specific applications and uses for medicinal and nutritional purposes; 2)an explanation of why these herbs are so critical to our overall health and wellbeing; and 3)an excellent introduction including frequently asked questions about the role and function of herbs. I have found it to be an excellent resource as well as an entertaing read.
