Review

Dr. Tilgner has written an impressive well-researched guide on the use of herbs that professionals and lay people alike will find very practical and informative. --Christiane Northrup M.D.

A wonderful guide for those new to herbs as well as an excellent formulary for those already skilled in herbalism. Sharol Tilgner has combined her triple skills of healing, farming and medicine making in her unique work with the plants. --Rosemary Gladstar, author, herbalist, founder of United Plant Savers.

This is an important text for the budding herbalist, and a handy reference for the experienced clinician. Dr. Tilgner has done an excellent job of pulling together a large amount of information and making it easy to access. A most valuable and useful addition to anyone s herbal library. --Jillian E. Stansbury N.D.

It is so full of information and so accessible.

I learned that Dr. Tilgner was a student and friend of the well-respected herbalist Cascade Anderson Gellar (I was a much more recent student of Cascade's).

This book also includes an appendix, which includes useful harvesting and preparation charts.

"Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth" by Sharol Tilgner is by far the best, most comprehensive user-friendly teaching book on herbs that I have ever come across. Period. It is written in a straight-forward, well -organized, easy style that somehow encourages the reader to awaken the thinker from within. It doesn't just tell you what herb to take for what symptoms, it encourages you to question, test, and think about what works for you.

In the "Properties and Actions of Herbs" chapter there are 16 pages of definitions for all those weird, technical words for actions you never quite know the meaning of. Like, what the heck does antihydrotic mean? Instead of having to look it up someplace else, you only need to go to this chapter to find out.

Unlike most other herbal books, this is not your typical information/reference book. This book is unique because the author is a naturopathic physician, an herbalist, and a teacher. It is written as though she really cares that you learn and understand the information, as if you are being mentored.

The chapter "How to Make Herbal Preparations" includes detailed instructions, step-by-step photos, and helpful tips for avoiding microbial growth, mold, etc. It's clear from reading this chapter that the author has done this many times. In fact, Dr. Tilgner started and ran Wise Woman Herbals. The information on dosages is technical but provides the lay person with good foundational knowledge on the application of dosage standards for herbs.

Dr. Tilgner also provides information on adjunct therapy for each condition which gives the reader options for a more holistic approach to treatment.

Format: Paperback
Included in this book is the most up-to-date detailed information on 190 valuable herbs including dosage, specific indications, general uses, active constituents, and contraindications. As noted Herbalist Paul Bergner states in the forward, " Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth is broad enough in scope that it contains within it material enough for three books".

There is an introduction to the actions and uses of medicinal herbs, a concise materia medica containing monographs of each herb. Next we find a complete section of herbal formulas organized by body systems. There is also a step-by-step guide to making your own herbal preparations. This book also includes an appendix, which includes useful harvesting and preparation charts. Ending with twenty pages of reference notes, we can be assured that all of the information in this book has been painstakingly researched.

For the beginner student this text starts off with a description of the properties and actions in our bodies of the individual herbs. For example, along with a list of Anti-inflammatory herbs is a description of the various ways these herbs can help reduce inflammation. In the Dictionary of Herbal Preparations Dr. Tilgner describes various types of preparations including information that will help the reader determine which preparation is best for a particular situation.

The Materia Medica is a detailed description of each herb, including the parts used, taste/smell, whether it is cooling or warming, and a description of the herbs constituents. Also a farmer, the author includes information for those interested in growing these herbs. She includes the various uses of the herbs and ends the section for each herb with contraindication and any applicable herb/drug interaction data.

This newly revised and expanded edition of Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth is my number one go-to herbal reference!

It is an indispensible resource which includes a rich Materia Medica. The Herbal Formulas are easy to follow or to modify for individual circumstances, as percentages are given for each herb. Each formula includes information on what condition it is used with, actions of the herbs, cautions, contraindications and suggestions for adjunct therapies.

Guesswork is gone and answers are found in the Dosages chapter with plenty of charts, lists and calculations. Amounts to use are described for adults and children as well as how much to use with "low dose" herbs.

Dr. Tilgner has written Herbal Preparations as though she is teaching in person. It has wonderfully detailed lessons to make herbal medicine fun and doable.

When I need to know which herb is best to use or I need to formulate a herbal blend for horses, dogs or my family and friends, this is the first book I grab off of my shelf. This is sure to be your number one herbal reference too!

This book is a gem between other herbal books in terms of clarity and herbal formulas for serious ailments. Herbs do work, if you use them in high enough doses and frequency. This book is a reference book -no stories or opinions. There is also a section of how to make your own preparations. Great book to have at home. I am careful about not buying too many books, but this book is the one I will buy (I read library copy).
