title misleading, must be sifted through...,
This review is from: Herbal Remedies of the Lumbee Indians (Paperback)
I was quite happy to find a local book about alternative therapies in Robeson County, but the title says this is about herbal remedies. The nearly 200 page book starts out with a 6 page "history" of the Lumbee Indians, which, to my unbiased (born and raised in NW US) opinion, is actually a strong perspective of the arrival of Europeans to the area; a defensive argument for recognition and monetary support from the federal government - not really a history of the native peoples. One half of the remainder of the book is a wonderful and detailed list of local plants and the various names, this IS what I would expect from the cover. There is also a list of applications of various plants. The other half of the book is interviews with Lumbee healers and elders - you must read through these old-timer conversations to find any sort of remedy. So, while the book may be a treasure of sorts for the local area, you must sift through very strong opinion and some political fluff to find any herbal remedies.
