This review is from: Herbal Remedy Gardens: 38 Plans for Your Health & Well-Being (Paperback)
This practical guide to growing healthful herbs includes 20 specific plans for such things as cold and flu gardens, healthy heart, windowsill medicine cabinet, skin care, first aid, hair care, relaxation garden, and lots more. Recipes - culinary as well as medicinal - are included with each garden type. The book begins with an overview of medicinal herbs, with their uses, cautions, and raising and harvesting advice. The "at a glance" box directs the reader to the gardens (always multiple) the plant is used in, so you can see what complements it and how the plant is used. Tables include specific plant care and propagation advice and uses in the garden for attracting and repelling bugs. Byers includes the basics on getting started, garden maintenance and harvesting, but the heart of this book is practical herb use. Byers even concludes with an appreciative and practical chapter on the wild herbs, otherwise known as weeds.

Fantastic!,
This review is from: Herbal Remedy Gardens: 38 Plans for Your Health & Well-Being (Paperback)
I've been interested in herbs and herbal gardens for years. Many books explain the uses for the herbs, but less have the fantastic garden layouts and detailed instructions for growing the herbs. Medicinal herbs are a great thing to use, I grew up using them. I just wasn't quite sure how to go about choosing which herbs, planting, etc. I'm not a gardener. It is perfect for those of us who know about the herbs (though it does give you many interesting recipes and details of the usage, as well), but want the practicalities as well.

This is just what I've been looking for!
Tells us how to identify, how to grow, and how to use herbs. (IE, if you make a tea, be sure to cover the cup while it steeps so as to get the most benefit.) Do you need herbs to keep headaches under control? For beautiful skin? Beautifully written and illustrated. Of particular use to me is the garden planner. I have so little land that it was either have a garage or a backyard, so ideas on how to make a garden both pretty and useful in a small space are wonderful.

I bought this book for my mother for Christmas this year. Of course I had to sneak a peak. I was really impressed. Each garden was for a specific "ailment" or "aide". Then, each garden is presented in two versions: container and standard. Then, in the same chapter, recipes are offered to utilize the herbs. I only got a brief look at the book, but from what I saw, I told her that I was going to order my own so that I didn't have to share. She said that she would start her new herb gardens this summer. Can't wait to see how they come out or to receive my own book to thoroughly examine.

I LOVE this book! It suggests different types of herbs to grow for a multitude of ailments, how to grow them, how to set up the garden to make it visually appealing, what to expect with the different types of herbs, how to preserve them, recipes for using them, etc. If looking to cultivate your own medicine chest naturally, this book will show you how to do it from beginning to end. Highly recommended!
