Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In a society hooked on the idea of better living through chemicals, the mere mention of herbal tonics is likely to be shouted down as another laughable example of snake oil quackery. But, as many contemporary medical practices are found to be ineffective, or even harmful, more and more people are turning to ancient natural remedies. For those interested in exploring the healing properties of herbs, this thorough book could prove an invaluable guide. Indeed, the introduction states the author's intention of providing, "a worry-free method for handling life's daily challenges to health and happiness." Who could ask for more? Handsomely bound in hardcover, Herbal Tonic Therapies is separated into comprehensive chapters on the various systems of the body, describing favorable tonics for each and including detailed information on the unlikely possibility of deleterious side effects. The book is scholarly, but written with the layperson in mind, offering a complete guide to medicinal alternatives for innumerable health problems from the most common cold to serious, life-threatening diseases. --George Laney

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any personal Herbal Libirary!, November 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Herbal Tonic Therapies (Hardcover)
Herbal Tonic Therapies by Daniel B. Mowrey, Ph.D. is a comprehensive guide to the use of whole herbs which includes folk use, clinical studies, chemical composition, safety data and references for each herb listed. The author cites European clinical studies as most of the sources.

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with information on tonic herbs and how they are used. This is written for the lay person as well as the practitioner.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in herbs, whether they were using the book for self-help, or studying Herbalism.

Beth Anne Haigler, Medicial Herbalist

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly honest, scientifically grounded review, November 11, 1998

This review is from: Herbal Tonic Therapies (Hardcover)
This book provided an "ah-hah" for me in theorizing mechanisms for tonic effects and in describing research on the paradoxical ability of certain herbs to achieve different reactions depending on the patient's needs. Faithfully recounts the studies (even details on study design to help one evaluate results) done, mostly in Europe, on the herbs reviewed. Very useful. Linda Larkey, Ph.D. (no, my degree is not in a medical field, but I've been reading about and using herbs for 20 years).

"Herbal Tonic Therapies" is an incredible book. Easy to read, informative, and practical, Daniel B. Mowrey's book is a must-read for those of us who want to take charge of our own health and to do so in an effective, safe way. After identifying and describing the major body systems, Mowrey identifies and discusses the mostly scientifically proven, preventative and curative effects and properties of major tonic herbs on those body systems. If you are suffering from a malady, even a severe one, this is an excellent, inexpensive way to seek alternative solutions.
