About the Author

Author Maggie Oster has been cooking since she was five years old. A trained horticulturist, freelance writer and photographer, Maggie has also written other Storey book titles including Herbal Vinegar and Herb Mixtures & Spicy Blends. In addition, she has written the books The Potato Garden, Flowering Herbs, Gifts and Crafts from the Garden and Recipes from an American Herb Garden. She attended graduate school at Cornell University, and was former editor of an indoor and container-gardening magazine based in Seattle, Washington. Maggie has also contributed to Rodale's Basic Natural Foods Cookbook, has written monthly columns for The Weekend Gardener Journal and Louisville Today magazines, and won an award for an article and photographs on cooking with edible flowers in The Newark Star-Ledger. She lives in Kentucky.

Maggie Oster's book has helped me in making the most tasty and beautiful herbal vinegars ever. I was stuck in the boring "chive blossom vinegar" or "Tarragon Vinegar" with no variations. After I followed a couple of Maggie's recipes, I livened up my meals immensely! Next, I'm going to try her "Dill-Burnet Cream Dressing" for my salad. It has only 5 ingredients, and they are very easy to find! This book discusses many different types of vinegars (malt, rice, cider, distilled, cane, etc), so I can decide which is best for the type of herbs I want to add. Have you ever tasted raspberry vinegar on a salad in a gourmet restaurant? It's in here! There are many recipes in this great book! Last year, I made Garlic, jalapeno, and black peppercorn vinegar, and my friends wanted the only bottle I made! This year, I'm making more to share.

Good value! This book has given me many ideas for new and revived products.
Maggie gives a good background history of vinegar and its manufacture, then includes heaps of recipes for dressings, sauces, vegetables and main courses etc. Additionally she gives suggestions for its use around the home and in tonics and home remedies.
I was impressed, and believe you will appreciate the book too!

I first checked this book out of the library. It is such a wonderful resource for learning about vinegar, its properties, household uses and cooking, including recipes, that I just have to purchase a copy for my library. I grow herbs and am interested in making herb vinegars. This book has so much more informatin. It also has a wealth of information of how to use vinegar around the house.

I bought this along with another book for vinegars & oils because I have an herb garden and wanted to make flavored vinegars (& oils) for Xmas. This book is a must if you need to know the basics and there are a lot of recipes for herbal vinegars. I recommend this book. It was a big help to me.

This book wasn't at all what I expected. I thought it would be more of a basic herbal book on making your own vinegars and oils without a lot of fancy ingredients.
