Book Description

September 1, 1994
This multimedia CD-ROM is intended for all involved in health care, whether practitioner or patient, designed as it is to introduce the skilled use of herbal medicines within a holistic perspective. In addition to the expansive text, written by David L. Hoffmann, it contains beautiful color photos, songs and verse by Jim Duke and narration by David Hoffmann describing the herbs and their medicinal uses.

For thousands of years medicinal plants have been at the core of alleviating human suffering and promoting health and well-being through the use of common plants. The essence of this accumulated knowledge on medicinal plants is practiced in Europe under the name of Phytotherapy.

David L. Hoffmann a leading authority on Phytotherapy, is a clinical herbalist from Britain where he was a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and faculty member of the School of Herbal Medicine. He was the inaugural president of the American Herbalist Guild and has taught Phytotherapy throughout the English speaking world. David brings hands-on experience to his wealth of detailed knowledge and practice of Herbal Medicine. As a teacher, author and herbal consultant in North America, he blends the experience of generations of herbalists with the insights of modern medicine making accessible the powerful healing tool for today's healthy living. David is the author of many popular books, including The New Holistic Herbal, An Elders Herbal, An Herbal Guide to Stress Relief, and The Elements of Herbalism.

Review

As is true with so many of us, when I received my copy of The Herbalist, I popped it into the computer and attempted to work the program. To my delight, I found an experience that was pleasant to sight and sound and one that was easy to work through. The music which accompanied the program was clear, fun and inviting. The opening scene is of a pond with a cabin in the woods. At this screen, there are designated areas of interest: appendix, history, basic principles, actions, herbal materia medica, human systems, context, index. By placing the cursor over the area of interest and clicking over that area, I was admitted to a wealth of information. This information was presented in an easy to understand manner, without complex language or processes to cloud the situation. (Alternative Health Practitioner Fall/Winter 97)

Hoffmann's voice and the songs - sung by herbal researcher Jim Duke - are great fun. They are a good way to lighten up herbal study and to also encourage people who are just becoming interested in herbs and the 'herbal community. This CD offers a sense of adventure to the professional herbalist, the herb students and anyone just casually interested in finding out more about herbs. (Wayne Hoyle, American Herb Association, Vol 12:1 1996)

Herb's (The Herbalist CD-ROM) walk through the herb garden with the author is a pleasant, charming, and educational experience. The depth and breadth of information on the disk is noteworthy. This is a system you'll want to explore in detail, not just with quick lookups, because of its considerable serendipity potential. (Cheryl LaGuardia, Library Journal Jan 95)

The most vivid program offering is its Herbal Materia Medica, which explains the habitat, constituents, actions, indications, preparation and dosage of individual herbs. When you click on an herb's name, the program features a detailed discussion and a photo, which can be enlarged to fill the screen with a click. Some of the herbs are accompanied by soundtracks. (Barbara Feiner, Emergency Medical Services Nov 95)

The Herbalist reference disk is seemingly endless, with thousands of topics ranging from arthritis to zinc. (Coaster Magazine Aug 95)

You will agree this is a well done program when you see it. I enjoyed browsing through the very professionally done screens and reading about the effects of various herbs on the many conditions of the body part, system or condition. (J. Woody Stovall, The Wilson World, Aug 3, 1994)

The Herbalist is an encyclopedic CD that brings together information - some of it greatly revised and expanded - from several of his [David Hoffmann's] books, along with new and often entertaining material. This is not just a list of herbs and their medicinal uses, although it could be used that way. Rather, it's an exhaustive treatment of holistic herbal healing as taught and practiced by Hoffmann. (Dave Merrill, The Herb Companion, Aug/Sept 94).

The text of this program is easy to follow, very informative and gives appropriate warnings regarding the use of herbal preparations. The songs and narration are enjoyable, and the digitized color photography is a great way to visualize herbs and plants. (Brian Gugerty MS, RN & Kathleen M. Bartley RPA-C, Computers In Nursing, Aug 94))

If you're looking for an electronic course in herbal therapy, its philosophical underpinnings, tips on herb preparation, and most important, which herbs treat what ailments, this is it. (Greg Keizer, Computer Life Oct 94)

If you're interested in natural health, you'll find The Herbalist a particularly useful reference. --New Age Journal, Nov/Dec 94

From the Publisher

In 1989, Hopkins Technology discovered a book called The Holistic Herbal by David Hoffmann. Thinking this would make a good CD-ROM title, we wrote to the publisher of this book in England. 6 months later, we got a note from the publisher saying David was now in the US. We wrote to him and about 6 months later, we met him in California. Months after that, we agreed to do the The Herbalist CD-ROM which ended up being a voluminous collection of his works, first published in 1992 and subsequently updated several times, adding photos, music, narration, cross references, etc. David has written additional articles and references specifically for this product and it now represents what has become known as the Standard CD-ROM reference on herbal medicine. He is the publisher of numerous books on herbal medicine, also available from Amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Collection!!!, July 27, 2010
This review is from: The Herbalist (CD-ROM)
Warning: This will ONLY run on WinXP 32bit and EARLIER operating systems, or a Mac!!! The format, Windows Multimedia Viewer (.MVB file extension), is a VERY outdated format that was designed for Windows 3.1. If the collection were recreated today, it would most likely be in an e-book or self-executable help file. That is about the only negative thing I have to say about this, but I still gave it 5 stars.

I call it a collection because that's what it is. It is a LARGE collection of information on herbs and how they *should* be used. It's almost like a mini version of Prescription for Herbal Healing: An Easy-to-Use A-Z Reference to Hundreds of Common Disorders and Their Herbal Remedies. You can search by the herb name, what it affects, or by how it affects. The main review above does the program justice, so I won't repeat what it says.

If you purchase this program (from any source) and have a 64-bit operating system, contact me for a version that will work. You MUST prove you purchased the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than I expected and then some., April 6, 2009

I was surprised that the CD was so complete. Herbal remedies are offered for so many common ailments and yet it does not present itself as the end-all-be-all of medicine. And that was a relief because so many of these books just try to tell you that herbs are all you need for good health. Good luck.

Anyway, this is a super guide to ancient herbals and I am so glad to have it.
