This is a comprehensive book on the life of Herbert Spencer and his theory of evolution and, in my opinion, not for the average reader. There are sections of this book that are far to technical and one would need a background in biology to follow Spencer's profound analysis. Herbert Spencer was a genius and nonconformist who criticized religion although his views softened in his latter years. Spencer also dismissed creationism and supernaturalism and strongly believed in his theory of evolution. However, notwithstanding the foregoing, Spencer could not postulate life nor explain consciousness, the creation of the Universe and the "First Cause".

Spencer was way ahead of his time, during the XIX century and even today. His writings are eye opening and priceless.
