Book Description

1855064529 978-1855064522 June 1997
Contains a representative sample of writings by the Individualists and their critics, and also by some leading Victorian politicians who attempted to translate political theories into practical politics. The debates between these thinkers raise some fundamental issues about the nature of liberty and the role and limits of the State that remain with us still. Many present-day concerns, including the issues at stake between liberals and communitarians, are to be found prefigured in the pages of this collection.

More About the Author

Michael Taylor has had a varied career as a central banker, academic and journalist. He has worked at the Bank of England, International Monetary Fund, Hong Kong Monetary Authority and currently at the Central Bank of Bahrain where he is Adviser to the Governor. In addition, he has taught at several leading universities and is a regular commentator on the financial scene, especially through his articles for Financial World magazine. However, his most famous publication is not included in this Amazon bibliography - his 1995 paper for the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation (a think tank based in London) entitled "Twin Peaks" - A Regulatory Structure for the New Century. This has become a standard reference in any debate on the future structure of financial regulation.

Before becoming involved in financial regulation, Michael Taylor's first love was philosophy and the history of ideas. He has written several well received books in this field, mainly on the work of the Victorian philosopher Herbert Spencer.
