Book Description

August 27, 1998
"A monumental work of scholarship, of integrity, of sympathy born of respect and humanity. A woven tapestry, rather than a mere listing of events and accomplishments, it reveals itself quietly and objectively, leaving the reader to judge a man whose personality was inseparable from the history of the age and his own background". (Yehudi Menuhin). To write about Karajan (1908-1989) is like writing about Callas - he was a megastar. Born in Austria, he had particular contacts with Salzburg and Vienna, and his career included controversial musical directorships in Ulm and Aachen. He was the mastermind behind the greatest European orchestra of his age: the Berlin Philharmonic. He worked with the finest artists of his time and pioneered the huge international business of recordings. 'The conductor's conductor', his career spanned a century.
