The Best of Herbie,
By
This review is from: Herbie Archives Volume 2 (v. 2) (Hardcover)
If you only buy one volume of the Herbie Archives, this is the one to get. Of course, if you do not buy them all, Herbie will bop you with this here lollipop!
Volume 2 of the Herbie Archives includes the introduction of Herbie's costume hero persona, the Fat Fury, in Herbie #8. The Fat Fury appears in even numbered issues which include a bizarre crossover in #14 (also in Volume 2) in which Nemesis (from Adventures Into the Unknown) and Magicman (from Forbidden Worlds) join forces with the plump lump -- all the costume heroes introduce themselves as from their comics of origin. Of course, there are time travel stories and stories featuring Herbie's dad's bad ideas. One of the few recurring characters, lookalike female non-interest Ticklepuss, is introduced in a time-travel story in #6 and reappearing in #10 in a story featuring yet another of Dad's business blunders. Unlike Volume 1, which includes stories that traced the development of Herbie's character, Volume 2 shows the golden age of Herbie, which continues and ends with Volume 3, due out in April 2009. Each and every story is remarkably original and, of course, hysterical, as is well documented on various Herbie fan sites. On the negative side, although the cleanup of the pages appears to have been done as well as Volume 1, I think the printing of some colors is a little dark. It does not affect any of the text, which is easy to read.

Herbie is one of my all time favorite comics character. His adventures were so off-beat that he was in a class all by himself. Humorous, quirky & surreal is the short answer description of his tales. I'm so glad Dark Horse has collected all of his stories together & reprinted them. Much better reproduction quality in this volume than in Volume one. In volume one most of the yellow came across a bit greenish. Hope volume three continues the quality uptick or someone's gonna "get bopped with this here lollipop!".

I think you would have to have read these as a kid. The art work is fabulous the stories wacky. Took me back to my youth when comics were 12 cents.
