Editorial Reviews

Just when you thought you could finally say goodbye to Lionel Richie’s "Hello," this and other vintage pop comes roaring up in Herbie: Fully Loaded, the soundtrack to the Lindsay Lohan flick in which the world-famous Volkswagen bug meets NASCAR. Thematically speaking, the CD is perfect; just as the movie teams a modern-day star with a Disney classic, the album offers up a gaggle of pretty young things (The Donnas , Josh Gracin, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray fame, Lohan herself) to belt out classic rock. Herbie the soundtrack is no critic’s darling, but it’s not without its highlights. McGrath does a good job with the sunny Beach Boys hit "Getcha Back," while Ingram Hill’s rendition of "More Than a Feeling" may prove irresistible--that is if your heart is open to super hits of the ‘70s. In the end, the soundtrack, like the movie (and NASCAR itself) are the same thing: pop culture that parents and kids can enjoy together. --Leah Weathersby

5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy, pops! Groooovy!, June 22, 2005
This review is from: Herbie Fully Loaded (Audio CD)
Wow, as a dedicated fan of Herbie, the Love Bug I have made 2 unoffical soundtracks for the little car. However, the soundtrack for the new film surprised me greatly as most of the songs on it, the trailers/TV spots, and the movie itself were on my own self-made albums!

The soundtrack is filled with many classic 60s and 70s covers along with new songs from the current year.

The soundtrack kicks off with Lindsay Lohan's 'First'. Although I don't feel the song was needed for the film, the guitar riff intro is a nice way to start the album. Originally, Lindsay was going to record a cover of Tom Cochrane's 'Life Is A Highway'.

Next, we get Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath covering my favorite Beach Boys song, 'Getcha Back'. His version is not heard in the film but I must say it is a very cool cover. The actual version by The Beach Boys is used for the opening title sequence of the film and after seeing it, I must say if I could give an award for Best Opening Title Sequence of 2005, I'd give it to Herbie Fully Loaded, hands down.

Then, we get the sister combo Aly & A.J. covering Katrina & The Waves' 'Walking On Sunshine'. In all honesty, this song sounds like it could've easily been taken from a Kidz Bop album, but a good cover nonetheless.

The next song is another Beach Boys cover, this time it's 'Fun Fun Fun' recorded by newcomer Caleigh Peters. It's kinda neat hearing a woman take on a Beach Boys tune, giving it more of an attitude. Well done, Caleigh.

Next we hop into the realm of the originals with the song 'Magic' by Pilot. I am happy that this was included on the soundtrack as the only other movie I have heard this song used in was Happy Gilmore and that film never had an official soundtrack made for it. A lot of adults will recognize this song immediately, but kids may have to wait for the lyrics to remember it. Regardless, parents and children should enjoy this one.

Next is another cover, this time from the 80s. Loverboy's 'Working For The Weekend' covered by Josh Gracin. While the original is the one heard in the movie, this cover gives the song more of a country rock feel.

Following this is yet another cover by one of my favorite all-female groups, The Donnas! Covering BTO's 'Roll On Down The Highway'. This is a great song to listen to while...well, rollin' down the highway!

Next, you get...yep, you guessed it another cover! Steppenwolf's 'Born to Be Wild' covered by The Mooney Suzuki. While the original is the one heard in the film, their cover gives the song more of a garage band feel to it complete with wailing vocals and loud guitar riffs.

And next we get, YEP! Another cover! Newcomers, Ingram Hill covering Boston's 'More Than A Feeling'. A nice little love song for the album that drifts the listener away from the rock songs for a brief set of minutes.

Next, we get (looks over notes) the eighth cover on the soundtrack. One of my favorites from California, Rooney covering T-Rex's 'Metal Guru'. When I first heard this song, I felt it had the same sound as The Smith's 'Panic'. Listen to it and you might find yourself saying "Panic on the streets of London...". Otherwise, a great newbie by Rooney.

Next, we have the LAST cover on the soundtrack. Josh Kelley covering Firefall's 'You Are The Woman'. Another good romantic rock song from the man who gave us the hit single 'Amazing'. This song is not heard in the film.

Following this is a staple of 80s love songs. Lionel Ritchie's 'Hello'. Yep, that famous love ballad that made pottery a new way of expressing one's affection is the song that plays in the film when Herbie spots his newfound love (a yellow New Beetle) at a party for the racers.

Then we get newcomers Mavin and their song 'Welcome To My World'. I don't know a whole lot about these guys other than the fact that they were one of the first bands to be contacted for the soundtrack. However, this is a nice little song that's most likely to be heard playing at a party with your closest friends. Under the age of 30 of course!

Lastly, we get 2 awesome remixes of the original Herbie theme by The Blacksmoke Organisation.

The first one is titled 'Herbie (Fully Loaded Remix)' and essentially turns the Herbie theme into a wild party song.

The second one titled 'Herbie vs NASCAR' is much more action packed as it combines intense racing action scoring with the original Herbie theme.

For Herbie fans young and old, past present and future, don't let this one get away. Pick it up for a trip down nostalgia lane.

P.S., if you're wondering what other songs were featured in the film and the trailer, here they are categorized to where they were used.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing, but fun nonetheless., July 28, 2005

I bought this soundtrack blindly for my daughter after watching the movie. She LOVES to buy the soundtracks for the movies she's watched at the theater, and quite frankly, after listening to cartoon inspired soundtracks everytime we drive in the car, this was a welcomed change. I was happy she wanted to be exposed to something new and was willing to listen to some "grown-up 'boy' songs" as she calls them. I'm VERY disappointed that the Disney execs chose to put little known artists' cover songs on this album rather than the more well-done orginals. It was painful enough watching Josh Gracin on American Idol the first time around, but now I have to listen to him in my car too? In my opinion, Disney should have stuck to the orginal songs in "Herbie". The result would have been a soundtrack that both kids and adults could enjoy together, rather than a painful rendition of the "original". I have yet to understand why music execs think kids won't appreciate well-done, well-rehearsed music. It seems as if soundtracks for kids are crammed full of musical junk that would never survive on an "adult" soundtrack, and this one is no exception. That being said, this soundtrack is a safe choice for kids of all ages, as it doesn't contain anything that can be deemed as offensive. It's a fun, light-hearted soundtrack for driving in the car with your kids, but it would have been better served with the original versions of the songs rather than the cheap remakes.

This review is from: Herbie Fully Loaded (Audio CD)
Hello all, I'm looking for a song in the Herbie Fully Loaded movie that I can't find in the soundtrack.. it's played when Trip convinces Maggie to take a ride on his "super" car.. it's an electroclash/rock song with lyrics by a girl, it reminds me of Peaches..anyone could help?
