3.0 out of 5 stars Not Essential, But Still Worth Having, August 20, 2008
By
These tracks were originally released on the CTI label circa 1974 or 75. The liner notes explained the title "Detroit/Chicago" was a reference to the two versions of Hornets: one recorded in Chicago, the other in Detroit. These tracks were released shortly after the success of the Headhunters album. Herbie had been recording as a sideman on a lot of CTI albums (Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay, Joe Farrell's Moon Germs, Penny Arcade, etc). The label also put on a number of festival-style concerts featuring their roster of musicians. The "California Concert" which featured George Benson and others is the source for Gibraltar, the track which features the horns. While all of the music here is enjoyable, only dedicated fans - out to recapture the old CTI releases, or a Hancock completist - would consider these tracks as essential. I am actually happy to see this music available since I am one of those dedicated completists. If you're looking for an overlooked period piece that is well recorded with some nice playing by all the musicians, this album is better than the bootleg-looking package would lead you to expect.

This a superb recording, featuring Mr. Turrentine and Mr. Hubbard (lets all pray for him he just had a heart attack).+ Mr. Hancock and Mr. Ron Carter!!BUT the end a portion of the recording has static for at least 5 minutes if I remember right.Otherwise the cd is crystal clear.
