The great Jazz flautist played World Music 50 years before the word and genre was recognized. This is one of the best of his early pure jazz recordings. Herbie made the flute a primo star of jazz much like Gene Krupa popularized the drums in the big band era. Just straight ahead jazz in an almost chamber music setting just flute, bass, guitar. Typical of the birth of the Bop era of the 50's. Very good indeed!

Before Herbie Mann went to Atlantic Records and made a name on pop-jazz and later outright commercial pop-disco, he did some pretty formidable mainstream jazz.

This comp features this late 1950s, early 1960s material. Say what you want, but Mann had flute chops, even if he sometimes took them in unchallenging directions.

Herbie Mann Plays has some great material, and if you ever want to fondly remember Mann, listen here to the absolutely haunting "Purple Grato." a creepy minor blues I heard in 1999, which has been in my head ever since.
