GameSpot Review

Herc's Adventures for the PlayStation comes out at an awkward time. Virgin just released the Hercules Action Game, based on Disney's summer blockbuster, which has met with pretty good reviews. How does this similarly-themed title, based on the same subject matter, stack up? Pretty well, thanks to its unique approach and interjection of humor into the game - providing you're into bad puns and offbeat dialogue.

The setting is ancient Greece, and Hades, the lord of the underworld, has captured Persephone, the goddess of spring and new growth. On a mission from Zeus, you have a choice of three characters - Herc, Jason, or Atlanta - and you must rescue Persephone, or else ancient Greece is toast. The game unfolds over forty different landscapes in an RPG-lite style that plays a bit like the old Legend of Zelda titles. Herc's Adventures is mainly straightforward: You just hit things and throw stuff at your enemies. Each of the three playable characters has its own special abilities, and the game offers different options for overcoming obstacles. Along the way you are presented with a variety of mythological enemies and bosses to fight, and two players can even team up and play at once in a cooperative mode.

So how does it compare to that Disney game? Pretty favorably. With its subversive humor and pun-filled setting, the game is surprisingly funny (in a fashion similar to LucasArts' Sam and Max Hit The Road). The graphics look quite good, and in some ways have a more refined look than Virgin/Disney's version. All in all, it is very impressive for a 2D game. When it comes down to it, Herc's Adventures offers much more depth than the Virgin/Disney title, which is essentially an arcade game. The graphics, gameplay, and humor make a unique mix that results in a truly fresh title unlike most of the other games on the market today. --Glenn Rubenstein

4.0 out of 5 stars good game but very tough, April 28, 2002

Herc's adventure is certainly very original in its approach. Basially, you play as either super-strong Hercules, bow-wielding Atlantis, or the swordsman, Jason. Each of the characters has their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Atlantis has an attack that has excellent range, but her strength is very low. In this game, you must rescue Persephony, goddess of spring, who has been captured by Hades, lord of the underworld. You play in the world of ancient greece, and travel from place to place in a top-view perspective (think A Link to the Past). Each character has their own unique weapon, but they can also use a variety of limited use items and weapons which you collect throughout the game. These are escencial to winning against the games tough bosses, which include Medusa, the Minotaur, Hydra, and Hades's three-headed dog Cerberus, to name a few. The weapons range from spears to chile breath to laser guns, and some are btter than others. To replenish health, you eat Gyros, and you need gold to buy a lot of important things. Howver, gold can be hard to come by, making saving (yes, it costs money to save) impossible at some times. Each character can lift objects such as rocks and houses, but that requires strength, which depletes when you pick up or crry an object, and whne you run fast, but goes back up slowly. Stregth max can be increased though dumbbell items or 'bought' from weight-lifters. The story is quite original and very quirky. It is almost guarenteed to draw a laugh at some point. The grapics are in a cartoony style, but are very rich and colorful. The sounds are cool, but the music can get just plain annoying after an hour or so. Gameplay wise, Herc's Adventure is very fun, but suffers from a repetitive air and its hard difficulty level. Overall, this adventure is worth a buy, and will keep you playing for hours on end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Game Ever Made!, June 7, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hercs Adventures (Video Game)
I cannot explain the love I have for this game. I have been playing this game since I was a little kid, and constantly play it over and over. Over the years I have shown this to over twenty of my friends, every single one of them has agreed to it being a very addictive game. I to this day don't understand how this game wasn't insanely popular, and how a second continuation of this game wasn't made. I myself would pay a few hundred dollars, or possibly even more for them to make a second continuation of this game if I could.

Basically to sum up the game, you can either be Hercules, Jason, or Atlanta as your character to play with during the game. (Or if you choose you can play this game with two players.) You first start out just defeating basic monsters like cyclops, then are told by Zeus that you need to defeat Hades as your mission. Then throughout the rest of the game you will visit Gods such as Athena, Poseidon, and Hera to help you along the way with your quest. You most likely won't solve the missions the Gods give you at first, but after a while it begins to be easy once you know the tricks to the game.

As for some bosses you will fight throughout the game are The Minotaure, Hades, and Medusa. The bosses get harder and harder each time. So ALWAYS make sure you are stocked up on a good amount of Gyros. A good idea is to go back and forth between Elis and Sparta and exchange arrows for Gyros, and also collect gold and buy it from the Gyro seller in Elis. Do this back and forth for a while and get 20 Gyros. 20 is a good amount to fight a boss..

But basically, this game by far is the best game I have played in my entire life. My CD that I have is in such bad condition; It has a huge crack in it and tons of scratches. The music skips so much and can get so annoying that I have to mute my TV at times. But you know what, no matter how much the game may crash, or the music may skip, I still play the game over and over because I love it. And no scratches or cracks in the CD are going to stop me from playing this game!
