Interesting Idea...Uncertain Reality,
By
This review is from: Hercules DJ Console Portable DJ Console (Electronics)
As a person who loves electronic music and DJ's, I was very interested in the DJ console. I bought one and tried it out with the included software, as well as Mixvibes (www.mixvibes.com). The results were mixed (no pun intended). While the unit works, it has its problems. There is some major latency between using the console and response from the software (25-50 ms). But worst, about every 5 minutes or so the unit sends false data to the software. So you could be mixing between 2 songs and have a perfect beat match, and suddenly one channel will speed up or slow down randomly, ruining the mix. Or you can have a song cued to a specific spot, and suddenly the song starts moving slowly backwards as if you were turning the jog wheel. I got these random signals in each software package which means it must be a driver problem or a problem with the console itself. I contaced Hercules but they haven't been much help, despite the fact that users on other web forums are experiencing the same thing. So the bottom line is, it's an interesting and fun thing to play around with, but if you want to try doing serious mixing, get a better controller like the PCDJ DAC-2 or Numark DMC.

Has Potential,

This device has some potential, but it's not close to being a professional tool. Don't plan on taking this thing on the road. One small bump and you'll hear loose screws shaking inside. The play/cue buttons are terrible too, so mixing and blending can be a pain when you have to press the button repeatedly for it to play. I can't seem to get a scratch effect either, though it's supposed to be capable of it. If that sound it makes when you spin the wheel is what they are calling scratch, then the effect needs some work. If you're just doing house parties and/or want a DJ toy, get this. Otherwise get turn tables (CD or Vinyl) and Final Scratch.

Sounds like you PC guys are having problems with Hercules. I bought the Mac edition and hooked it up to my Powerbook with a G4 processor and I don't miss a beat. I can see room for improvement with some huskier hardware, but overall the little box gets the job done and the Traktor software is incredible!

When i first saw this product i immediately bought it as a cheap alternative to a fullblown CDJ setup, I installed everything with no problem at all, but once i started playing with it, the right side deck track always started to stutter or play back in a very annoyng way, i think it is all due to the very poor USB 1 connection, My setup is really fine to make music so i think the reason for the crappy playback is mainly the USB connection. I connected it to a root USB as recommended but still didnt have any good response, My PC is AMD Athlon 64 +3500, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Sata HD, which is more than sufficient to make music or mix, but it didnt work out as planned with the console, i mean i didnt expect the same level of performance with the console as with a real hardware setup, but i must say that it is impossible to work with it since it skips beats on the second track. Tried it for 2 days in diferent computers and didnt work out, Im looking for someone who wants to buy it now.
Dont buy it if u plan to rehearse your sets at home, not to say NEVER ever use it to play in a club or party. Why did Hercules make something so appealing and at the same time made it useless using a USB 1 type connection, id rather pay a little more if it had a Firewire port , i think that if this thing would use firewire, there would be no problem at all. One "little" mistake can make a good piece of hardware totally useless... DON'T GET IT.

Good Toy,

I bought my hercules dj console a couple of days ago. It works good. But is not a professional console. If you are running a club, don't get this. The console is just a dj toy; if you are looking forward to enter the dj's world, it might be a nice start. I recommend to use it with virtual dj. but try to get the latest version of this software, in order to enjoy more features (samples, effects, skins, etc.).
As I said, it works ok: the buttons respond as they should. The scratch effect is not as good as I expected but the rest of the console is ok. As a sound card, I think is not a good option. Use it just as a dj console, and have your sound card ready to have a better sound quality. When you use it with virtual dj, you can configure the software to have more than one card functioning at the same time (your pc's sound card to hear the music, and the console to mix). Once you've learned to mix well, get a professional cd player and a good mixer...

Think very carefully,

1, The buttons are VERY poor leading to many miss-cues.2, The "full Professional" software IMO isn't, it's a cut down version and has many fundamental unresolved flaws (BPM detection, sound quality, no id3 tags, poor eq, etc). 3, Early hardware versions may need returning to manufacturer for upgrade/fix before the console is usable. 4, Current Problems with Win's stand-by & Hibanate may mean frequent unpluging of USB to fix lock-ups. An amusing toy, i kept mine but i will not buy from Hercules or Atomix again.
