3.0 out of 5 stars A Curious Choice Of Styles In Here
For me it's very difficult to review something like this soundtrack since Joseph LoDuca uses so many different styles from different composers in the field of film music. The real treat here is the Hercules main title, which is one of the best ever written for T.V. However, there are so many influences from composes like James Horner ("Krull"), Peter Gabriel...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hercules: The legendary journeys soundtrack., April 5, 1999
This review is from: Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - Original Television Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Loduca puts together a soundtrack packed with emotion, and an intense listening experience. LoDuca who also orchestrated the creepy hymn to the Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, moves on to bigger and better things with his partner Sam Raimi, excuative producer of Hercules. To generate new life into popular growing series, with tracks that drift you off into another world, or in the heat of battle between Hercules and a band of thugs. The music suspends scene after scene of the weekly syndicated series and welcomes a whole new world of beautiful listenings . So weather you enjoy the show or not, I recommend lending your ears to this breathtaking soundtrack, it will create images in your mind and hours and hours of outstanding listening experiences

5.0 out of 5 stars Distinctive, fun, and suitably heroic!, October 1, 2006
This review is from: Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - Original Television Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This sampling of fully-orchestrated soundtrack selections by Joseph LoDuca from the "Hercules" TV series of the 1990s sound more traditional, perhaps, than his work for "Xena" and "Brotherhood of the Wolf." But it is equally engaging, with great variety of mood and texture. Trademark brass carries the heroic theme, while bassoon is liberally used to express mystery, menace and comic relief. I love it when a soundtrack composer really gets into the material, tying together diverse scenes and techniques by finding ways to parse, reinvent and work that recognizable theme into all sorts of unexpected places. LoDuca does a great job of that--this album really holds together. Listening to it is like reading a story or watching one unfold on the screen. I also love it when composers using a standard full orchestra aren't afraid to incorporate funky world percussion, and LoDuca excels at this as well, to great effect. "A world without music is no world at all," series creators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are quoted as saying in the CD insert. "Joe's music, like the great god Prometheus, breathed life into our men and women of dust and celluloid." It does that, and more. It stands on its own, as a distinctive work of art in its own right! Try also LoDuca's music for the "Xena: Warrior Princess" TV series, a spinoff of "Hercules," and also for the movies "Brotherhood of the Wolf" and "Army of Darkness." For more cool soundtracks, check out the work of another imaginative composer, James Newton Howard, for such films as "The Village," "Hidalgo," and "Waterworld."

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, June 20, 1999

I am niether a fan of HERCULES or XENA but have listened to many Volumes of their soundtracks because a friend asked me for an honest opinon about them ... How can Mr. LoDuca do so well with the HERCULES soundtracks, which are just lovely, and do so badly with the XENA soundtracks, which are irritating? I suppose it does not matter. If you are fans of these two shows you will buy the music no matter what but - as an impartial listener - I would choose this HERCULES soundtrack straight away, over the XENA music.

The real treat here is the Hercules main title, which is one of the best ever written for T.V. However, there are so many influences from composes like James Horner ("Krull"), Peter Gabriel ("Passion-The Last Temptation Of Christ"), and specially, Basil Poledouris ("Conan The Barbarian", "Robocop", "The Hunt For Red October"), which makes me very difficult to find out LoDuca's own style.
