4.0 out of 5 stars I actually liked it,
The only reason i gave it only 4 stars and not 5 was the lack of Gabrielle. The Animation is fine. I like modern animation and this was a good example. I also thought that Xena's song in the middle of the film was great

But I will try to explain the movie's effect on me. This was perhaps the worst piece of animation I have ever seen in my life. If Universal had any sort of pride (or sense), they would have at least viewed this mess and done something to fix it. I was totally disappointed in this. But I will try to explain the movie's effect on me. This was perhaps the worst piece of animation I have ever seen in my life. If Universal had any sort of pride (or sense), they would have at least viewed this mess and done something to fix it. I was totally disappointed in this. I wanted more Xena (and more Kevin Smith as Ares, RIP), and this was the only thing I hadn't seen, and it just made me cry.

However, it was an excellent laugh. I was giggling throughout the film from the entire absurdity of the plot and dialogue. The animation could only be weeped at (why did Xena's hair have red highlights, why was Hercules' shirt so messed up, why did all the normally attractive actors who play the roles look so horrible animated?), but the songs were so bad and the story so silly I couldn't help it.

So, if you are dying for something else Xena/Hercules (anything!), then do take this movie out of the library. It is a fun laugh with the voices of the actors on the two shows. But I wouldn't buy it unless I was a collector of the series' stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars What is with this cheap amimation?, January 21, 1999

This review is from: Hercules & Xena (DVD)
Okay. To start I'm used to seeing snow, and after seeing the animated Herc and Xena...I'd rather watch snow (as in static snow at the end of the tape. Yes, don't get me wrong, I am a great fan of Hercules and Xena. And beacuse of the bounderies live action possesses I was completely thrilled that it was decided: that a cartoon was to be made. YA-HOO! It would have been great too. The original cast and a really great story idea, that could have easily spawned sequels...in a word Sucked ( just because of the cheap(I can't draw) artist!?! rendition of the actors and the really slow, throw back to 1960's anmimation. Why? Oh, the humanity. The (movie) Gods should be merciful, and never allow the same artists to ever create another cartoon again. Thanks For Listening, The movie amazon, MOUSE

2.0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?, May 31, 2002

They took these two amazing television shows that has an average viewing age of 20 and made a poor-quality animated movie meant for kids around age 8.

Universal truly needs to get a clue. I mean the landscaping was cheap slops of paint on cels that were very far from realistic. And, while they may have some meaningful style for the creators or artists, they have nothing to do with the story or series. The animation is about the equivalent of the original Snow White (not cleaned up) with a Saturday morning cartoon quality. The characters do the most obnoxious things and I can see why Sam Raimi chose a "Executive Producer" credit instead of a director one.

Story: mediocre. Zeus abducts Hercules's mom and flies off to Mount Olympus just as Herc tries to stop them and fails. Hera, jealous at Zeus's audacity, steals a stone from a pedestal in the middle of the throne room. This stone is apparently the essence of Earth and the source of the Gods' powers. Hera unleashes the titans and they all climb Mount Olympus. Herc decides to save mommy by climbing Olympus. Artemis and Hades choose Xena as their hero after Herc turns them down. Aphrodite spends more time surfing her shell-board than making any sense. After that it all falls apart and it is a mediocre film. I rented it to see if it was worth the money. If you have kids who may have seen the series (doubtful) they will love this.

I am surprised they got away with the singing and the opening to the movie that is almost verbatim and identical in introduction as the Disney movie a few years ago...

Better animation and better story would have helped.
But Universal apparently did not look at this before they released it.

Oh, one last thing: they must have rushed through the coloration, as Xena's warrior suit is plain white with pencil outlines in a few cutscenes. How poor is that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids!, June 30, 2010

I read the negative reviews and I just think, "It's a CARTOON! What did you expect?" Seriously, I love Xena and so does my five-year old daughter. When she wants to watch Xena, this is the Xena I don't have to watch with the DVD remote in hand to "jump" over scenes that are inappropriate for her age.

It's a cute movie. All the negative remarks about the animation are probably from people who are jaded by CGI. The plot was creative and the characters remained in character. The fact that they got the original actors to voice the characters probably helps. Besides, we get hear Lucy Lawless sing and that is always a treat as far as I am concerned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Come on you hipocrits., April 16, 2008

Ok, so all of adults out there that have seen this think it was awaful. Yet you continue to all give raving revues and express your need to see the latest "let me shot some guy until he's dead" or some retarded foreign film that no one can understand and you PROTECT those films because they HAVE to be good because they're meant for adults.
we'll you all are idiots.
Just because it wasn't what you were used to doesn't make it bad.
So the animation may have sucked? It was 1998. what do you want?
the original star wars effects sucked but everyone LOVED that regardless.

Anyway, this movie provides and interesting spin on the typical hercules movie, which disney completely disneyfied, btw.
It's plot may be predictable but so what, almost all movies today are.

They stuck to the actuall mythological side of the tale better than anyone else:

~Hera hated hercules, and tried to kill him.
~Zeus was a pig, and "played with mortal" women
~they actually used the Titans as charaters

So this may not meet your standards of a good movie, but what does anyone know about movies anyway?

If it makes you laugh and you don't feel the intense urge to flee the room, then it's a good movie, regardless of what the "standards" are.

So you all need to just wake up and decide for yourself. If you like the movie, then it's because YOU actually had an opinion for once(shocker)and it shouldn't matter what THEY think about it.
