christ's cage,
By Thomas Mitchell (Tampa, land of blunts and superpredators) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Here in After (Audio CD)
Immolation's second is proudly and defiantly metal. Vigna and Wilkinson spit out massive riffs with a furious dissonant edge as Ross Dolan bellows. My favorite song, by far is Christ's cage, particularly when everything briefly stops and Ross goes "BUH". Percussion has a free jazz flavor with a great deal of Lombardoesque fills, especially in how Smilowski rides the toms. Craig does sort of a running multi-textured blast with heavy emphasis on hypnotic cymbal rhythms. Songwriting is some of the strongest in the genre as demonstrated in Nailed to gold and I feel nothing. While I'm a big fan of Alex Hernandez, Craig Smilowski's performance on this album is superb. Highly recommended.

Odd But Brutal Death Metal!,
By ashkenaz (Monroe, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Here in After (Audio CD)
I had heard people talking about this band so i diecided to pick up a copy of their cd. This one was the only one in the store at the time so i bought it. I took a listen and i was wowed! The album is a death metal masterpiece! Ross Doland has a great voice. With the music, the guitars use a lot of odd time changes and the guitars themselves sound not like a usual death guitar. A lot of harmonics in this that make the songs sound more evil than they already are. THis was also the last cd with origional drumm Craig Smilowski ( not sure on spelling ). They should have kept him. the new drummer is nothing like craig was. craig is super fast and has one of the most brutal double bass blasts ever! possibly one of the best drummers in the world. I would recommend this to any death head just it will take time to get used to at first because of the odd style. If you hate this cd give it another listen because it grows on you. This is also a lot better than Failures for Gods, and the production is much better. guitars dont sound as muddy. This is probably their best cd, and i recommend you get dawn of possesion, another masterpiece. over all this is one great Death metal cd!any fan of cannibal corpse, suffocation, or anything in that genre will love this cd!

Excellent followup,

More stuff in the vein of their first album, 'Dawn of Possesion.' Excellent stuff; the sound on this one is a little more varied, the rhythms a little more intricate. I'd tend to say get the first one first, and if you like that, grab this one as well. Definitely if you like either one you should get the other. It's a bit shortish, like their first one (like 35 minutes?), but hey, quality over quantity.

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE DEATHMETAL RELEASES OF ALL TIME! THIS IS IMMOLATION'S FINEST MOMENT IN TIME. OTHERS BASH IT FOR ITS COMPLEXITY. WELL, DEATHMETAL SHOULD BE COMPLEX, TALENTED. IT MAKES OTHER BANDS THINK ABOUT THEMSELVES. THIS IS IMMOLATOIN'S MOST HEARTFELT, MELODIC AND EMOTIONAL RECORD. OH, AND LEST WE FORGET, IT HAS SHEER BRUTALITY ALL OVER IT ALSO. ROSS DOLAN AND CO. HAVE DONE IT THIS TIME, PUSHING THE CONVENTIONAL DEATH BOUNDARIES TO NEW BETTER EXTREMES, FORCING OTHERS TO PLAY BETTER. GET THIS ALBUM BEFORE ANY OTHER IMMOLATION, OR AS A MATTER OF FACT, BEFORE ANY OTHER BAND, EXCEPT MAYBE SUFFOCATION!

Brutally Brilliant,
By Orphan of Sickness (253) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Here in After (Audio CD)
After 5 years and a change in record labels (from Roadrunner to Metal Blade), Immolation were able to create their sophomore album that took extremity to a whole new level. "Here in After" is a landmark album that isn't all brawns, all thanks to the dissonant guitar rhythms of Bob Vigna and Thomas Wilkinson. The riffs are rather refreshing by enhancing the band's dense atmosphere, depending whether they're slow and plodding ("Here in After"), bizarre ("Nailed to Gold") or all-out overwhelming ("I Feel Nothing").Drummer Craig Smilowski succeeds behind the kit, supplying fills to blend in with the already mind bending riffs explained. Vocalist Ross Dolan still sound impressive with his vocal approach that steers clear of monotony, backing that up with some nice rhythmic bass to add with his three mates previously mentioned. As brilliant as this is, this isn't elementary stuff. The production is a bit rough but it will unravel after multiple listens. Despite this, "Here in After" is golden stuff from its time and should be appreciated for its class musicianship and solid songwriting. Score: 9.8/10 (minus .2 for mastering)

TECHNICAL RIFFS A-PLENTY HERE!,
This review is from: Here in After (Audio CD)
This is the 2nd Immolation album I purchased. At first, I didnt like this one all that much, I dont know what is was... but it's grown on me in the last 5 months (I got in back in early Feb. 2006). I've always liked the 1st track, "Nailed to Gold" & the title track "Here in After," but now some of the others are getting good all the sudden. While it didnt immediately catch me like their masterpeice of a debut "Dawn of Possession" did, its a good album & you can hear that signature Immolation style really starting to come into its own. Be sure to get this when you can though... I dont know if its out of print like their 1st album is, but it was hard to find. If you like Immolation's brand of DM, I also recommend "Failures for Gods," "Close to a World Below," "Unholy Cult," & of course the brilliant debut "Dawn of Possession." Get any of them, & Im sure some of the others are good too.

Immolation-and Again......,
By Shawn Anderson (Manistee, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Here in After (Audio CD)
Immolation is one of the most unique death metal bands of all time. Their songs are brutal but in a different way from other bands. Immolation uses disonance and odd time changes to achieve their ultimate brutality. Wilkinson/Vigna make a great guitar team. One guitarist will play one tone while the other guitarist will play a different tone that doesn't go along with the other tone. Thus you get a disonant, even uncomfortable sound. The guitarists also perfect the use of bends and harmonics to achieve their evil sound. The drums themselves are confusing. On Here In After the lyrics reflect the band's philosophy on religion and eternity and Again....This is not your standard death metal album. Here In After is a masterpiece.

Cool, but the production is kind of weak,
By
This review is from: Here in After (Audio CD)
This album was recorded after a hiatus of about 5 years. Immolation had a lot of time to grow in that period, and you can really hear the development of new ideas, especially the dissonant riffs, but its pretty clear that they weren't entirely comfortable with this new style yet. The production is pretty shoddy, and really lacks the low end and punch of their debut, but does capture the feeling of hallowness and despair that they tried to create. Weird timing signatures pop up everywhere, as the death vocals shake your fillings loose. Its a good album, but I'd reccommend their first album or their new masterpiece, Unholy Cult, over this. Still, if you want innovative death metal, this is not a bad place to look.
