Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Set against the gorgeous landscape of Armenia, HERE chronicles a brief but intense relationship between an American satellite-mapping engineer (Ben Foster, The Messenger, 3:10 to Yuma) and an expatriate photographer (Lubna Azabal, Paradise Now, Incendies) who impulsively decide to travel into uncharted territory. As their trip comes to an end, the two must decide where to go from HERE.

Maybe it was just me and my expectations were too high.

It is here (no pun intended) - in the exploration of two very real, very human beings - that HERE expresses its greatest strengths.

The contemplative indie "Here" is a sweet, yet understated, look at a cross-cultural romance in modern day Armenia. Braden King's film not only gives us a glimpse of the challenges and beauties of that world, it stages it through a quiet lyricism. Almost like a travelogue, the movie traverses the countryside (oftentimes with little to no dialogue) as its central pair grows closer. It is a quiet and intimate film that relies heavily on mood as opposed to any major plot revelations. In fact, if you're looking for a big story--this is probably not the experience for you. But I enjoyed the subtle charms of this picture, the feeling that it created, the mood that enveloped me while watching it. It was, at once, lush and hopeful but also somewhat sad. I enjoyed the simplicity of the principle narrative and didn't feel it needed additional embellishment. "Here," though, is told as a sort of poetic story. A narration by Peter Coyote opens the film and appears throughout (over abstract visual images) which is meant to give the small story greater import. While these interludes were lovely, in and of themselves, I don't know that they added to my enjoyment of the film's simpler message. Making the entire experience more self-conscious and arty, I didn't dislike the device--I just didn't think it was necessary.

The movie stars Ben Foster, as an American working on satellite mapping, and Lubna Azabal, as a local girl he meets rather randomly. After their paths cross a couple of times, they start to work together. An obvious attraction turns into a heated romance. As he's just a visitor in her country, however, the relationship seems fleeting at best.

Yeah, I'm not one much for formula movies. I like the unexpected yet I'm also a female who enjoys a good love story. This one was refreshingly different and thought-provoking. Nice character development, not the usual backdrop for love, and not predictable. Enjoyed it.

This film isn't a mainstream film but critiques of all levels will love the beautiful scenery, deliberate character development, stoic pace, solid acting, and gripping wandering story. A shame it isn't available on Blu-Ray where it would offer even greater impact and resonance of Eastern Europe's flavor.

Some nice scenery. Decent story. Some strange filming with confusing artsy flashes of imagery that made no sense to me.

I felt like I was back in school and being asked by the teacher- " What did the author really mean?"
Same answer on this film. How should I know?
