4.0 out of 5 stars "Will I see you tomorrow Stanley?" "Oh, don't come to the bottom of the river just for that.", April 21, 2010

Even if you're a big fan of the wonderful Bob Hope, the chances are good you haven't seen this overlooked gem. I know I hadn't, and it didn't help that major film guides give "Here Come the Girls" a poor rating (an inexplicable 1.5 stars in Movie Hound). When I finally saw the movie I was surprised how good it is, and I wanted to write a review for you Hope fans who are thinking of buying it unseen.

Hope is Stanley Snodgrass, a chorus boy in an off-Broadway play. Stanley's a lousy actor, a terrible dancer, and a one man wrecking crew ("Failure is the only thing I've ever been a success at."). Though worshipped by the adorable Daisy (played with sweet sincerity by Rosemary Clooney) it seems Stanley will never reach his dreams of stardom. But suddenly he is given the lead in the show, and finds himself romanced by the leading lady (stunningly gorgeous Arlene Dahl). What gives? Turns out there is a mad killer on the loose, a killer determined to be with Arlene and equally determined to murder anyone who stands between them. The scenes of "Jack the Slasher" attempting in vain to murder the oblivious Stanley are some of the best in the film.

"Here Come the Girls" sports one of the best musical scores in any Hope film, including the delightful "Ya Got Class" duet with Rosemary Clooney. This is a great movie for Clooney fans, as she also sings "When You Love Someone" and "Ali Baba (Be my Baby)", with a cute riff on her famous "Come on-a My House". In addition, silky-voiced Tony Martin gets the song "Heavenly Days", which while advancing the plot not at all, I still thoroughly enjoyed.

This movie is chock-full of great Hope one-liners (such as his joyous promise to his mom to celebrate his success with "off-season strawberries. Hives for everyone!") and wonderful supporting characters (including the always reliable William Demarest, picking up where he left off with Preston Sturges). Millard Mitchell as Hope's put-upon step-dad is especially fun.

I would put "Here Come the Girls" just below "Fancy Pants", but slightly better than "Casanova's Big Night". The ending is a bit slow (poor editing undercuts the tension of the story) but I didn't mind that in light of the great sets, terrific costumes, wonderful songs and lots and lots of laughs. A must-have for Hope fans and a rating of:

GRADE: B+

(Favorite bit: The scene after Stanley has doused himself with a dozen bottles of perfume, leading to this classic exchange with Arlene:

Arlene: Is something on fire in here?
Hope: That's a gentlemen's perfume, my own blend. It's called Blue Snodgrass. Does it do something to you?
Arlene: Yes, but if we open a window I think I'll be okay.

Wasn't he the best? I love it.)

4.0 out of 5 stars See Here Come the Girls Now, November 3, 2011
This review is from: Here Come the Girls [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This overlooked Bob Hope vehicle was great on many levels. Bob Hope's lines are some of the best, Rosemary Clooney sings some wonderful songs. The stage sets and costumes are sumptuous. Also, the Rosemary Clooney Ali Baba scene with the harem girls was featured in the Science Fiction Classic "Conquest of Space" as the movie being shown to the crew on the Space Station!!!

Wish this would be remastered onto DVD or Blu Ray!
