This is for the thinking person type of horror movie. It's not a slasher. It's not a jump out and scare you. The movie tells a story. It's like having someone tell you a legend in the form of a movie. When I finished, I felt like I had just read a good book. The movie stayed with me after I watched it, in a good way. I thought about the legend and what if it was true. Sometimes, after a slasher movie, I can only remember a few kill scenes, not that I don't love slasher films. This is just different. Anyway. I love films like this and I hope to see more.

That is if you don't mind dialogue and story development. This story starts off with a bang and then simmers down to bring us slowly into the mystery of events unfolding. The aesthetics are a fascinating blend of grindhouse, giallo and, well, trippy hallucinogenic devil movie stuff. The soundtrack is spot on and never distracting. Yes, there were moments of gratuitous sex, but that felt appropriate to the subject matter. Let's just say that there's some clever editing that makes it an important part of the story it's telling. To tell you what I think it added to the story would be a little too revealing, (so to speak), so if you can keep an open mind about it, perhaps you'll see what I mean.

I also compare this to "House of the Devil" but the style never trumps substance and therefore never gets boring, which was my main problem with HOTD. I give it a 5 because I gave HOTD 4 and I do believe this was better. It IS arthouse/thinking person horror, not slasher or torture porn or horror com, so keep that in mind before renting. For those open to this kind of horror film, it is creepy. as. hell.

This is a slow burn horror film from the Spanish horror director of cold sweat. He has directed a few other films as well, but this one is definitely his best work. I really hate when other reviewers give low ratings because it wasn't scary. Horror films don't have to be scary. Films like this should build up the terror slowly, and that's just what it did. Yes it's low budget fare as well, but they had all the money they needed to pull everything off convincingly. The film reminded me of Picnic at Hanging Rock a little bit. It's more of a mysterious horror film. I absolutely love this kind of horror. There's just not enough of it. So if your a true fan of horror do yourself a favor, and see this film. If you loved House of the Devil, your going to love this. If you thought that was boring, then your probably not going to like this. Watch Transformers 3 again, and save the smart stuff for us.

I was very satisfied with this one and it held up in a primetime hour slot. The movie uses a minimalist approach: nothing fancy, ordinary settings, characters, and life situations (not including the supernatural element here). The effect is a realistic one, despite the implausibility of the supernatural plotline, I felt like I was peeping in on someone's life. There were hardly any effects. Don't expect a demonic possession hissyfit, a poltergeist tantrum or anything of that sort. Overall, I imagine the budget on this one was low, but the production values do not reflect that. Camera work was fine. Some of the cinematography was great, the area where the cave was. The actors were excellent, especially the parents. They were both believable and entertaining. Their kids, a daughter freshly entering puberty, and a slightly younger son, were good as well, though for most of the film they were, errhhh, don't want to spoil, not acting themselves. But its not a histrionic "not acting themselves". You will see what I mean. The other, few characters that appear along the way, are creepy, weird, or convey a sense of dread or foreboding, that sustains the atmosphere of dread, a proper horror atmosphere, throughout the film. Its more of an atmospheric film than a visceral shock fest. The story is different (hooray!) and you don't really see this type of horror scenario play out often. The ending is unsentimental, like I like 'em. An adult's horror film, despite the inclusion of children and the family in crisis as the protagonists. Once again, it proves to be true, that the only place for kids in horror, mature horror, is in the antagonist seat (excepting for rare exceptions), No PG13ified cornfest here. Highly recommended for the horror junkie. Thanks filmmakers!

It's hard to find any original and well made American horror films these days, so if you're cool with subtitles, give this one a shot. There's a decent story here, and although it's not perfectly executed, I overlooked that flaw due to the consistent tension and well designed sense of impending doom. My biggest complaint was that it felt like it could have been at least two different films, but only because some of the themes it touches upon could very well have made into their own movies, but that's a small price to pay for a well done, well acted, b horror movie. Worth a late night viewing if you're a horror hound like yours truly.

I did enjoy this film although I can't say I loved it. By the end, it seemed to me that there were some subtle plot holes that never get explained, although maybe that is the point. The devil works in mysterious ways. There is a lot of thick and creepy atmosphere throughout with convincing performances all around but the film didn't quite latch on like it should have. I'd still recommend this for horror fans! The director has a promising career and I look forward to his next project.
