Imagine a one-acre farm so rich the soil "ought to be kept in a bank." Be warned that crops grow so fast you'd better jump out of the way when you plant corn. The stalks will shoot up and skin your nose.

That's the world of Josh McBroom, the lovable teller of tall tales, who is now celebrating a quarter century of keeping his readers in stiches. Here, collected in an anniversary edition are 3 of the famous tales with Quentin Blake's spirited illustrations.

A man who would rather sit on a porcupine than stretch the truth, Mc Broom tells about the winter of the Big Freeze when red barns turn blue with the cold. Even words freeze stiff in mid-air. And then a ghost comes knocking...

And there arrives a summer so dry the McBroom cow gives powdered milk. Another time a tornado carries off his wonderful topsoil, and he tracks it down with a compass cat, whose tail always points north.
