"Come On Home" the Tremeloes Compilation awaits!,
By
This review is from: Here Comes My Baby: The Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.
The Tremeloes to many were the band that had a hit with "Silence Is Golden" and the story ends. To those that have experienced some or all of their sounds, they are anything but a one trick pony. The December 2004 compilation is magnificent in its scope. Eighty-two tracks opening the doors of their musical diversity. The songs do not include the days when members were backing Brain Polle. With a myriad of terrific covers, the compilation will impress the harshest critic with the groups ability to take on songs from all rock and roll spectrums and deliver them as if they were Tremeloes originals. Call it chemistry or any word that comes to mind but these guys are one of the most underrated of the magical era. "Here Comes My Baby" opens the festivities and is the perfect introduction. The Beatlesque sound is superlative. The vocals are magnificent in wording and inflection. Speaking of the Fab Four, the cover of "Good Day Sunshine" is crafting in such a way you can't help but feel invigorated at the end of the tune. "Silence Is Golden" is a calling card not only for the Tremeloes but also as one of the best hits the radio would ever spin. The song is timeless, ages with beauty, and not rust. Maybe you hear a bit of the Four Seasons influence as the vocals remain in your mind long after the track ends. Did we mention the Four Seasons? The version of "Rag Doll" is superlative. The mix even enhances the experience. The Tokens had a worldwide hit with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The Tremeloes version stands right up to any and takes its best shot! "I Shall Be Released" doesn't much resemble Dylan's Herculean effort, but the Tremeloes take it in a different direction and excel! The Motown masterpiece "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" shows another of the styles the band can tackle. Don't think for a moment the treat here is enjoying a cover band. They are well skilled at writing and performing tunes they penned. This truly makes a wonderful introduction to the band and if you have been on board for all these years, it is terrific to have so much material available together. Enjoy the music and be well, Craig Fenton Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

As a big fan of 60's pop music, I remember of course SILENCE IS GOLDEN,HERE COMES MY BABY, and a minor hit CALL ME NUMBER ONE. I was very happily surprised at the quality of the remaining 79 songs on this compilation. I had the 45 to SUNSHINE GAMES by another band and was glad to find it here, done very well.Maybe none of these less familiar songs were certified hits, but they are well worth having as a log of good British 60's music. The price of this collection is a stone bargain.
