From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-Toby, the intelligent, spunky, and problem-prone pup from Always in Trouble (Scholastic, 2009), is back in this quirky, funny story about the love/hate relationship between cats and dogs. Toby really doesn't like cats, and he is incensed at the fact that they always wreak havoc and never actually get punished for it. When Pandora, a neighbor's cat, comes to stay while her people are away, Toby tries to make trouble for her, but she ignores him. When she does naughty things (shredding the curtains, sampling the cake), no one seems to notice. When Toby samples the cake, everyone notices. The injustice of it all really irks him. But then, Pandora gets herself stuck in a tree, and no one notices except Toby, who cleverly arranges her rescue. Thus, a friendship is forged. The repetitious nature of the text and the bright, expressive illustrations make this book a great pick for any audience. Children who are familiar with Toby will be satisfied with his continued adventures.-Jasmine L. Precopio, Fox Chapel Area School District, Pittsburgh, PAα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

Toby, like most dogs, doesn’t like cats. He always seems to be in trouble with his young owner, Emma, but cats get away with everything. So when Pandora, the cat next door, has to stay with Emma’s family, Toby is angry. Pandora refuses to notice Toby no matter what he does, and Toby gets blamed for her shenanigans. But when Pandora gets stuck in a tree, Toby does whatever it takes to rescue her, and they become friends. This simple story with bright illustrations stands on its own or could easily be used as a parable of bringing a new baby or foster child into the home. While Toby’s willingness to help Pandora (in spite of her initial snobbishness) may be hard to explain, it is rewarded, and the concluding scene—the two delightfully romping on Emma’s bed—will have kids and adults alike laughing. Preschool-Grade 1. --Moore, Melissa

This story is about Emma’s dog named Toby. He does not like cats because they are slinky, spunky, snooty and snobby. Most of all, they do not pay attention to him. Toby’s next door cat, Pandora, was all these things! One day, the worst happens to Toby when Pandora comes to stay with them. Emma tells Toby he needs to behave, but he does not behave and gets into trouble. Pandora misbehaves too, but the bad thing is nobody seems to care. Then, Pandora climbs up a tree and gets stuck. Nobody notices but Toby. He writes on the kitchen floor “Cat in Tree”. This helps Emma’s family find Pandora and bring her back down. In the end, Toby and Pandora jump up and down on Emma’s bed and become friends.ǁToby is my favorite character in this book because of the silly things he does to get Pandora to notice him like chew her toy mouse, eat her cat food and vomit in the toilet. I like the pictures in this book because there is so much fun action.
