4.0 out of 5 stars not for the musically squemish
Its nice to see someone who is not afraid to make a record that
might not get played on the jacuzzi jazz stations that seem to define todays jazz. For all the great musicians that water down their art for the sake of acceptence its nice to see an honest musical statement by a worthy artist. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not his best
I have always listened to Dean Brown's fierce improvisations with great admiration. His mastery as a soloist is unquestionable, and he has always stood out as one of the greatest guitar heroes in my list. What most impresses me in his playing are his aggressive tone, countless chops, versatility and "funkiness". I still marvel at his work with Billy Cobham's Glass...

For all the great musicians that water down their art for the sake of acceptence its nice to see an honest musical statement by a worthy artist. This record reminds me of the type of music that was called jazz-rock or fusion 25 years ago and bit the dust when dumbed down records from Spyro Gyra,
George Benson and Kenny G recieved wider public acceptance creating the current format that passes for jazz today. There is somthing to be said for maintaining your musical integrity as it is a rare quality in todays sales oriented market. Bravo Dean Brown!!! Dont give up the quest!

"Here" by Dean Brown is a marvelous mixture of ALL the delicious elements of "fusion"......equal-parts jazz, funk, & rock, this debut CD by one of jazz's most-dedicated & sought-after side-men is a gr8 listen...many times over!!..........and, with an incredible supporting cast of players (i.e.: George Duke, Billy Cobham, Marcus Miller, the Brecker Bros, David Sanborn, Bob James
& numerous other veteran musicians...), this CD can't be beat!..It really ought to be considered as one of the years' best new releases.........let's hope for more magic from Dean soon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Blues-funk-jazz, November 21, 2001

Dean Brown is an extremely versatile player that -finally- has chosen to step out front with his first solo CD. He shows mastery of a wide variety of styles, but always with a soulful approach. Dean chose to demonstrate his composition prowess rather than focus on his chops, resulting in a sophisticated recording that still has energy. The instrumental tracks are stronger than the two vocal tracks, in my opinion. The final track, a tribute to Jaco, is fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work, July 5, 2009
This review is from: Here (Audio CD)
This CD is an example of how to do it right. Just because you're a guitar player doesn't mean that you need to overpower all the other musicians. Dean Brown concentrates more on the music. If I did not know this was a guitarist's work, I wouldn't be sure who this music was produced to showcase.
**And of course, Marcus Miller is killing as ALWAYS!!!***

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, August 1, 2007

I have always listened to Dean Brown's fierce improvisations with great admiration. His mastery as a soloist is unquestionable, and he has always stood out as one of the greatest guitar heroes in my list. What most impresses me in his playing are his aggressive tone, countless chops, versatility and "funkiness". I still marvel at his work with Billy Cobham's Glass Menagerie in the eighties, when the (super) lineup was Cobham, Brown, bassist Tim Landers and keyboard master Gil Goldstein. Unfortunately, in "Here", Brown seemingly chose to be more of a sideman than he used to be in other musicians' recordings. There is little space for guitar improvisation, and the atmosphere is a bit too "pasteurized". Great sound, excellent mixing, stellar musicians, but lacks emotion, which is something that I would never expect from a player like Dean Brown.

Dean Brown is a great musician who most don't know his name, but have heard him. Just check out the huge list of who's-who's in the Jazz and Funk world who play on the CD. You don't get people like that on your CD unless you're great yourself. Everytime I play this CD for someone they end up going out and getting their own copy. If you love funky jazz you will love this CD.
