If you're the sentimental type who likes to be able to look at original artwork and packaging (and lyrics, which aren't present here) while listening to your favorite CD's, then you may want to hold on to your old `Snake discs. For me, any opportunity to streamline three bulky jewel cases into one slim-line double-disc case containing three albums' worth of material plus six bonus tracks and remastered sound is money well spent. And the requisite liner notes tell a good story. Like most liner notes, you'll probably read it once (if that) and never give it even a passing glance again, but it makes for an interesting package nevertheless.

I'm not going to go into much detail on the old material. If you're reading this, you're probably already familiar with Whitesnake and know that the "Slide It In" and "Whitesnake" albums are classics. "Slip Of The Tongue" was a big disappointment, primarily due to the addition of Steve Vai, a fabulous technician on the guitar who unfortunately does not possess enough blues influence to fit in comfortably with this band. But I was pleasantly surprised how good the songs from that disc sounded all these years later, in the context of this package.

As for the six bonus tracks - these aren't mere filler! "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again" and "Sweet Lady Luck" are classic WS rockers, and "Looking For Love" and the soulful, gospel-like "Need Your Love So Bad" are excellent ballads. The two "remixes" of "Here I Go Again" and "Give Me All Your Love" are great as well. "Here I Go Again" is actually a full-on remake awash in synthesizers, created solely for mass Top 40 appeal. Most fans of the "Whitesnake" album HATED this version when they heard it on the radio, but I happened to like it better than the album version. Either way, it makes for two discs worth of Whitesnake's entire recorded output from 1984-1989.

If you love Whitesnake's Geffen catalog and want to hear those classic albums in upgraded 96k/24-bit high resolution sound than this set's for you. When you get it, try this! Open your CD burning program and add tracks in this order: Still Of The Night, Bad Boys, Give Me All Your Love, Looking For Love, Crying In The Rain, Is This Love, Straight For The Heart, Don't Turn Away, Children Of The Night, Here I Go Again, You're Gonna Break My Heart Again. Create the CD and now have the far superior, import version of the 1987 classic. Why they sequenced the tracks differently and chopped two songs off the American release I'll never understand. It's a shame that the Coverdale/Sykes partnership was so short-lived. Had they stuck together, I'm sure this genre of music would have never died.

Although not officially a "greatest hits" release, this double CD contains 24-bits remastered (and complete!) versions of three most known and successful Whitesnake albums: "Slide it in", "Whitesnake" (1987) and "Slip of the tongue". So, all their hits you might remember from the eighties are in there: "Here I go again", "Still of the night", "Is This Love", "Fool For Your Loving", "Now You're Gone"... Also, a couple of bonus tracks and B-sides add some more value to it -- being the thunderous "Sweet Lady Luck" one of my preferred ones. All this is complemented with a pretty good booklet containing some pictures, liner notes and information about each song.

On the (slightly) negative side, you might complain that it doesn't come with the lyrics. In addition, I think that at least one track with Vivian Campbell on guitars would have been a nice-to-have on it. But had it to be perfect? No way! This release is close to perfection and rocks anyways. It is worth your money and delivers the goods as you expect and deserve. Hats off to the record company!

To conclude: if you're just a casual fan (as I am) this is probably all what you need from Whitesnake. However, if you are a true fan and want to collect all their albums this double release would make no sense at all (probably you already own all this, and will hate feeling yourself compelled to buy the same thing once more). But for the rest of us, I think this is of a great value. I'm personally glad they released this. Five stars then!
