Editorial Reviews

"Here" finds acclaimed singer/songwriter/pianist Owen performing at the top of her creative game. From the yearning title track "Here", to haunting tunes like the Ray Davies classic "I Go To Sleep", (Owen's version is featured in HBO Films' "Mrs. Harris"), to the sophisticated Bacharach-esque "Best Friend", and the mesmerizing song "Worship" (with vocals by k.d. lang), the Welsh-born songstress calls on her pop, classical, jazz, and R&B influences to tell how she achieved inner peace by confronting her stormy past. Not without humor and irony, Judith brilliantly tackles Survivor's rock anthem "Eye Of The Tiger", providing her signature jazzy interpretation. Inspiring, sincere, and fearlessly introspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Niceness Counts, December 14, 2006
This review is from: Here (Audio CD)
This is one of the nicest c.d.'s that I've heard in quite awhile. And contrary to the old saying, niceness counts for something.

Although you'll find it in the jazz section of the c.d. part of the store, it really sounds more like a pop album. Except for "Eye of the Tiger", which is constructed on a jazzy 6/8 riff, this album reminds me a lot of Elton John's first album (the one with "Your Song" and "Take Me to the Pilot").

Three cuts stand out: The aforementioned "Tiger"; "Worship," with some gorgeous orchestral harmonies and vocal harmonies supplied by Tony Bennett's buddy, k.d. lang; and the highlight, or the bonus track, "I'll Watch You (While You're Sleeping)". The latter cut is a precious lullaby that a parent would sing to his/her sleeping infant, complete with the artist's "Ahh!" exclamation of satisfaction at cut's end. A most satisfying end to this album, indeed.

As for Ms. Owen, she has a very nice singing voice, particularly in her lower register. I wish she didn't breathe so much, thereby interrupting the lyric lines; but since she wrote most of these songs, I guess she can interrupt them whenever she bloody well wants to!

In many ways, this c.d. reminds me of one of my favorites of this year, also a jazz-pop album, Erin Bode's "Over and Over." The first time I heard that one, I liked it; the second time, really liked it; the third time, loved it; and the fourth time, loved it even more. I've finished two listens to this. I'm not yet to the point of twisting anyone's arm to buy this c.d.; but give me time. I may get there yet. RC

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, September 12, 2006
This review is from: Here (Audio CD)
Judith was on Mountain Stage in Morgantown, WV on Sept. 10, 2006. She was absolutely wonderful. "Here" and "Eye of the Tiger" were instant hits with the audience. Her non-produced performance was refreshing. I highly recommend her CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars VELVETY JAZZY VOICE, January 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Here (Audio CD)
wonderful voice of Judith Owen suggested by the Today show host- Al Roker. I have had this tape for several years and have yet to grow tired of the mellowness and wonderful velvet tone of her voice. Enjoy
