Great early Bing songs, April 24, 2004
This review is from: Here Lies Love (Audio CD)
Bing's voice was a breathtaking instrument in these years, as these songs amply prove. I think his absolute height in range and expression was in the years 1931-1936, a period generously covered in this collection. If you're only familiar with the Crosy voice from the 40's and 50's, then you're in for a special treat. These recordings showcase Bing's more husky, jazz-influenced delivery, replete with scat singing, improvisations, banter with sidemen and absolutely dizzying vocal virtuosity. Perhaps the most beautiful song here is "Temptation," a poignant display which Bing sings with piercing emotion. The high, sustained notes he hits here will send chills down your spine. Another gem is "Love is Just Around the Corner," blessed with a killer vocal performance and jazz band backup. This is an outstanding collection and one which you transform a fence-sitter into a bonafide Crosby fan. I owned this album on vinyl for years and am thrilled to see it finally offered in CD format. Enjoy it!

If you love Bing Crosby and great love songs, get this one, February 20, 2001

While Bing Crosby doesn't sing his hits on this CD, he does sing some incredible songs. Bing uses his powerful, magnificent voice to sing terrific numbers such as "The Very Thought of You," "Temptation," and "Let me Call You Sweetheart." Once again, if you are a fan of these and the other love standards on this CD, and you know how great the typical Bing Crosby CD is, then you should at least consider getting this one.

A fine sampling of ballads from Bing's early jazz period, January 18, 2006
This review is from: Here Lies Love (Audio CD)
Bing Crosby in the early 1930's was as much a jazz singer as Louis Armstrong, however most remeber his as the pipe smoking Christmas crooner of the 40's-50's, and the dumb novelty songs he sang with the Andrews Sisters. Well this is the hip Bing, the one with the black prasing in his voice, and although he doesn't scat liek he does on Dinah or Sweet Georgia Brown, he is stil la fine jazz singer even on lush ballads like Love Thy Neighbor, Love In Bloom, May I, and It Must Be True. Bing's vocie is commanding, rich, rhythmic, and romantic. You can hear Louis Armstrong's influence, that rasp in Bing's voice that he only had in the 20's and early 30's. This is a fine sampling of early jazz Bing, singing ballads.
