Book Description

April 6, 2009
From Here to Mastectomy is about Lesley Green Huffaker EdD's life journey before and after the diagnosis of breast cancer. The author identifies some of the important markers of her life, and invites you, the reader, to do the same. Some of these events include discipline as a child, pieces of a love life, and a marriage that didn't last.

Most of the themes are common to us all and the author's dream is that on her web site you would be willing to share your life, and even be able to blog about what makes you motivated, afraid, and how you make decisions.

What Lesley does in this book is ask questions. You might say, What for? Well, the questions that we need to ask can apply to any tough time we might go through...like job loss, divorce, or cancer. And just imagine doing that with a faith that does not depend on magic! So many times when we tell people we are Christian only one image comes to mind. Many Christians believe that we must read the Bible in a certain way. The author has another idea. And it works way better for her!

About the Author

Growing up in Los Angeles was a great place for families of many cultures, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds to learn to listen to one another. Lesley attended a church that worked hard to include as many kinds of people as possible in youth camps, workteams, leadership roles, and ministry.

Her life has always been a lot about inclusion! As a Youth Minister they focused on inclusion when they worked on an Indian reservation to rebuild a burned-out house. As a teacher she was nicknamed The Inclusion Queen for helping disabled students become part of their regular education classes. Lesley's dissertation focused on including children with dyslexia into reading groups where they could receive instructional support.

And now in this book, Lesley focuses on the spirituality of inclusion; questions about how our faith journey opens up all of us to become more inclusive of others. With this environment for growing up, she was afforded the opportunity to attend Whittier College, Fisk University, San Jose State University, College of Notre Dame, Claremont School of Theology, Methodist School of Theology of Ohio, and Nova Southeastern University. Professionally, Lesley was an English and German high school teacher, a Resource Specialist for students with learning disabilities in high schools, middle schools, and elementary school. She was a Youth Minister in the Los Angeles area in the early 1990's. Part of her life is still devoted to tutoring students with learning disabilities and serving as an advocate to help schools and families better meet their students' needs.
