5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect material & musicians for this wonderful voice., June 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Here in My Heart (Audio CD)
This is by far one of Kenny's best works to date, although I have to admit, I like them all! The light, airy and moving brazilian/samba sound is the perfect setting for this jewel of a voice and Kenny's unique, jazzy vocal stylizing. Great musicians, arrangements, and engineering. If you've never listened to Kenny and you like jazz vocals, give this one a try. Fans of Bobby McFerrin, Diana Krall, Ella, Michael Franks, Jobim, Torme'(RIP) etc. should like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you don't know Kenny, this is a good place to start, February 21, 2000

Before I start I want you to know I am a confirmed Rankin FANatic. This may be Kenny's finest CD to date. A sensous blend of his magical voice and some of the top musicians from Brazil. If you are in love, or in the process of falling in love "Puzzle of Hearts" and "Stay" must be carefully listened to. You must really listen to the lyrics and the way Kenny wraps his voice around them. The addition of the Portugese only adds to the sensuality. If you have never been exposed to Kenny Rankin, I would start with this or get "Peaceful...the best of" in my opinion you can't go wrong.

I've loved this artist for years, and this one is his best! Puzzle of Hearts is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. The Brazilian influences are just right. Love this CD -- absolutely LOVE it!

Kenny Rankin is the sort of singer who gets under your guard.

Sample his unpretentious and highly accessible style of jazz just once - late night or rainy Sunday by the fire - and before you know it, you're hooked!

Rankin's music oozes class and sophistication and touches you on a very personal level.

So it is with this outstanding set "Here in my Heart".

The star cuts are many, among them the title track with its flute intro (a la Herbie Mann) and its highly intelligent and romantic lyric.

The album is rich in unexpected treasures including the haunting, yet downbeat-cool "Those Eyes" and the dismissively-sardonic "Slight Infatuation".

The Beatles "I've Just Seen a Face" and Jobim's "Happy Madness" are also unexpected windfalls on this wonderful disc.

Overall, the arrangements are elegantly simple and sway to a soft Latin beat.

Rankin's performance is first class - and then some - as is the material contained hereon.

"Here in my Heart" is up there with the finest jazz/Latin/romantic albums ever made.

FIVE STARS for this ultra-cool set and the jazz of sophisticated romantics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Kickin', August 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Here in My Heart (Audio CD)
I started listening to Kenny way back when he was with Chesky.I acquired a Promo only CD in a little cardboard case and there were two songs on there by Kenny. All I can say is smooooooth.

While Kenny has matured in his music it still contains Kenny's trademark romantic stamp. The lyrics are simple yet somehow speak to your heart in a way that you've never felt.

The slight Brazilian undertones I was a little leary of when I first bought it but much to my surprise they add so much to the tracks that I can't imagine enjoying this CD without them.

Anyone familiar with jazz will enjoy the fact that Michael Brecker has joined up with Kenny on this CD and definitly adds his own balance to the music without cutting through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the best, April 30, 2002
This review is from: Here in My Heart (Audio CD)
Kenny's the best. What a range. First he was pure pop (Silver Morning, Inside). Then he did some great work in jazz (Because of You, Professional Dreamer). This album is jazz, but with a nice Brazilian samba, showing a nice influence of Jobim. It's a relaxing but rhythmic piece of sound. Although I'm generally favorable to anything that Kenny produces, this is absolutely my favorite.

This is one of those rare CDs, the kind you listen to over and over. I wasn't a Kenny Rankin fan, but was led to his music through my love of Brazilian jazz, Ivan Lins, Rosa Passos, and many of the Brazilian musicians Kenny used on this CD. This is a very fine CD, one of my all time favorites. I have owned this album since it came out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vocals, blended with jazz and brazilian influence, July 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Here in My Heart (Audio CD)
This cd has enough to feed an entire army of musically starved souls...Kenny Rankin's angelic vocals blended with the skilled and playful performances of the Brazilian influenced musicians make this one of his best albums ever. "Puzzle of Hearts" is hypnotic. You won't hear a more seductive rendition of "I've just seen a face". "A slight infatuation" and "A lovers touch" are other gems. This is viagra to the ears.
