Artist Video

Forty years into his recording career, John Hiatt has chosen to title his 22nd studio album, Terms of My Surrender. Surrender? Is that as in Cheap Trick? Or Appomattox? Hiatt laughs, tentatively, at the choice.

“It’s my Appomattox,” he says, wryly. “Really I don’t know where it came from, that idea of trying to arrange the terms of my surrender. I ... Read more in Amazon's John Hiatt Store

Editorial Reviews

The dawning of the new millennium coincided with a new chapter in the career of John Hiatt. After a quarter century of releasing records on major labels five in all he kicked off an over 13-year run as an independent artist, recording a pair of albums with Vanguard before moving to New West, his label home for more than a decade. These albums contain unflinching reflections on the bad old days, weighed against his latter-day front-porch serenity. The collection features 17 songs, at least 2 from each of the 8 albums released between 2000-2012 & the previosly unreleased song "Here To Stay" ft. Joe Bon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here to stay? Now that's truth in advertising! December 8, 2013
Format:Audio CD
John Hiatt is a writer's writer and singer's singer. For 40 years, he's been serving up delicious slices of warm, wry, sunny, sad Americana, sometimes rocking, sometimes intimate, but always honest and human. His versatility and creativity are legendary, having written for or been covered by the likes of Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, Jimmy Buffett, Emmylou Harris, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Rosanne Cash, Aaron Neville, Joe Cocker, and others. Many of these artists have also played, sung, and recorded with him. But Hiatt on his own has put out some of the best roots rock I've ever heard, equally influenced by deep country and blues sources.

If you're just starting to get to know Hiatt's music, you'll be best served (and most assuredly hooked) by a two-CD set on the Hip-O label called "Anthology." It contains the cream of the crop from the six different labels he worked for during his first 26 years of recording. All 40 tracks, whether well-known or little-heard, are master classes in the art of crafting melodies and lyrics. Beginning with the 1974 song "Sure As I'm Sittin' Here" from "Hangin' Around the Observatory," his first album, it runs through such gems as "Riding With The King," "She Loves The Jerk," "The Way We Make A Broken Heart," "Have A Little Faith In Me," "Thing Called Love," "Drive South," "Feels Like Rain," "Angel Eyes," and "Cry Love," concluding in the year 2000 with the title track from the album "Crossing Muddy Waters."

Which, not coincidentally, is precisely where this new collection starts. It presents two tracks from each of the eight studio albums Hiatt has released over the past 13 years, plus the title track, a new duet with blues wunderkind Joe Bonamassa.

Although I have all of the albums that contributed to this best of effort, this is truly a best of--and not meerly a greatest hits album. Nothing new, but every song is raised to a new level thanks to the quality of all the great songs around it. Plus i can now make room for the new album on my iPod. well worth it even if you do own the originals.

I first saw John Hiatt on Imus in the Morning. Never heard of him prior to that. I was hooked after that. If you like country mixed with folk and a little rock you need this album. Great band backup and great vocals by John.
