Image of Freddie Hubbard

Freddie Hubbard was, next to Miles Davis, the most dramatic and far-reaching brass player of the past 60 years. He died at age 70 in December 2008, leaving a legacy of some 100 recordings under his own name and with everyone from Wes Montgomery and Art Blakey to Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Quincy Jones, Dexter Gordon, George Benson, Sarah Vaughan, Max Roach, Count Basie, Ornette ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, "Here to Stay" September 12, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I've reviewed many of Freddie Hubbard's Blue Note RVG CDs here on Amazon, and in most of them I mentioned how "Here to Stay" was a better candidate for reissue than a particular title. Well the powers that be at EMI must have been reading my comments because "Here to Stay" is available once again after being out-of-print for nearly twenty years! While I still believe "Ready for Freddie" is the trumpeter's best BN disc (see my review), "Here to Stay" is not far behind. In fact, this album is the most Jazz Messenger like of his Blue Notes, which is only natural since it was recorded in the middle of Freddie's famous stint with Blakey, and made with three of his JM mates -- Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman. In fairness, Philly Joe Jones does provide his own unique rhythmic support -- he's never out in front like Art is -- but that only accounts for a slight difference in the overall sound. This December 27, 1962 session features two standards, two Hubbard originals, and two wonderful tunes by the under-appreciated trumpeter Cal Massey, last seen contributing two original compositions on Lee Morgan's "Leeway" (see my review). In all, jazz fans will be delighted that this Freddie Hubbard album is finally "Here to Stay."

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this CD!! June 1, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Another terrific Freddie Hubbard Blue Note release! I'm not sure why they waited so long to release it, but I'm glad they finally did...

Some beautiful playing by Hubbard and Shorter, and a great rhythm section of Reggie Workman & Philly Joe Jones with excellent and sympathetic piano by the unheralded Cedar Walton...

Every song is superb but the 2 Cal Massey tunes and Hubbard's "Nostrand and Fulton" really stand out... and the standards "Body and Soul" and "Full Moon and Empty Arms" won't disappoint...

One of my favorite Freddie Hubbard Blue Note releases along with "Ready for Freddie", "Open Sesame", "Hub-Tones" and "Blue Spirits"... a highly recommended set!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music from a great musician August 23, 2008
Format:Audio CD
This CD showcases the neo-bop genius of Freddie Hubbard, an aspect of his musical talent that is not evident in his CTI recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential. January 22, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album was shelved by Blue Note for 2 decades. The label tries to make it sound as if it was due to the recording not being as strong as Hub's previous BN releases. The fact is, "Here To Stay" is up there with "Ready For Freddie", "Open Sesame", "Hub Tones", and his finest work on the label.
Hubs and the band cook. No jazz lover should be without this. The sound is perfect. Although there are only two Hub originals "Philly Mignon" and "Nostrand And Fulton", the covers of Cal Massey's "Father And Son" and "Assunta" are burning. The rendition of "Body And Soul" is the finest Hubbard ever recorded.

Get this one right away.
