5.0 out of 5 stars Pure, uninhibited, raw energy blowout extravaganza!!!, November 6, 1998

This disk is really unbelievable. I worked at a pizza shop for awhile, when I had this disk in, literally 50 people a day would say "Wow, who's that". If you want to get a taste of some N.O. jazz that will spoil you, check out this "Rebirth" disk, then when you are enlightened to the ways of "The Rebirth", goto "The big Sleazy" and check them out fo' real!!!

Today, the Rebirth Brass Band is mostly renowned for their frenetic live show, and having seen them twice I can say that they really are something to behold. But on record, the New Orleans collective is almost equally as satisfying. The group's recorded debut, 1984's "Here to Stay," is a great sign of the things to come. This is a live recording, and it's not a perfect performance, but what it is is strictly entertaining. Still teenagers, the players show a wild style drawing from many influences. They play fast, with improvisation and tight musicianship throughout. Their arrangements are very well done and the performance is nice. The jewel of the album is the nineteen-minute "Mardi Gras Medley," the opening track, which features numerous New Orleans standards. The transitions between the different songs in the medley are flawless, and the song is excellent. Other songs are covers of jazz standards, but they also draw influences from pop performers like Michael Jackson on "Here to Stay." Later in their careers, Rebirth would go on to a more refined sound, but this album is a whole lot of fun and I highly recommend it.
