elegantly minimalistic,
This review is from: Here & There (DVD)
after a great Village Voice review one reader responded, which i think sums it up great!
'Here & There' presents itself as a small film, but it's not. You get sucked in by the plot but by the middle of the film, you're paying more attention to the characters emotional evolution. The Serbian actress who plays the mom is terrific. Totally believable. And the way the relationship between her and Robert, the lost soul from New York, unfolds caught me by surprise while at the same time it seemed like the most inevitable thing in the world. If 'Here' is New York, I thought the 'There' of Belgrade was infinitely more interesting. The director does a very good job of letting us get to know a city most of us don't know. And even though you know Robert is going to wake up out of his torpor, it's delightful to watch the process unfold in its sleepy, tousled way.

With the chaos in Arizona against immigrants, no stories in the news are from the eyes of the immigrants. Who tells our story? Many of us Americans, first/second/third generation Americans, have family in other countries. It's very difficult for us to live both here and there. This movie "Here and There" shows immigrant struggles from the immigrant's eyes. But this film is so much more than that. It has something for everyone...comedy, friendship, romance, Destiny, doing the right thing, mid-life struggle, etc. You can't watch this movie and not relate to it in one way or another. This movie has received several awards and great reviews. Definitely not a movie to miss.
To the creators of this film, a heartfelt THANK YOU!

One of my favs of the year...,
This review is from: Here & There (DVD)
Saw this film at the Tribeca Festival in 2009, and again in Quad in 2010. It's so pure and real. Beautiful direction and cinematography, impeccable acting, and a truly lovely story. I'm tired of the brainless, pseudo-human stories constantly thrown at us. If you want to spend 90 minutes being moved by art- which is the real power of film- then this is the kind of movie you want to see. Can't wait til Lungulov's next project.

My husband and I stumbled on this wonderful film at the Quad in NY. Buy it. You'll watch it more than once, guaranteed. It's smart, funny, moving and magnificently executed.

Wonderful performance and Direction,

Here And There is a terrific comedy and drama which is a tale of two cities, New York and Belgrade. I cant say enough about the film, it has wonderful pacing, is poignantly shot and, masterfully acted. I first heard about the film at the Tribeca Film Festival last year where it won an award and have wanted to see it ever since. It was worth the wait, my new favorite movie!

Great movie,

This is such a good movie, it captures you right away, like a great pop song, and refuses to leave your head or your heart.
It's a grown up love story--a welcome relief from the whippet-thin, perfectly coiffed hollywood actors and actresses. These are well-worn faces and lived in bodies that nevertheless convey sensuality and desire. This is one of those movies that you don't just watch so much as experience. Instead of following the typical formula, it stays true to life--there is a scene that captures the hopeful awkwardness of a first kiss in a way I've never seen on screen before.

What an Indie Film Should Be,
By
This review is from: Here & There (DVD)
The ninety minutes spent watching Lungulov's "Here and There" can hardly be associated with the countless hours one may spend viewing films that are on the Independent Film circuit today. Where boring, underdeveloped plots generally exist, "Here and There" exploits a brilliant storyline, delivering to the audience new views of post-independence Belgrade and the Serbian culture that exists domestically in New York City. However, "Here and There" is hardly just a case-study of modern-day Serbian identity; it serves as a commentary on the way in which the Eastern European and American worlds interact in a day-to-day, often-misunderstood fashion.
The characters played by Thornton, Karanovic and Trifunovic become extremely lovable, like a group of distant friends rather than actors on the screen. Though their early interactions may leave you wincing at their awkwardness, they grow close, leaving the viewer feeling as if they have truly experienced an emotional journey instead of scripted relationships. "Here and There" diverges from the standard indie-film formula, but for this reason, it stands above the rest.

Saw this film twice!,

I saw this film twice and I would see it again.
I just love how down to earth, sensitive and funny it is. Nothing cloying, nobody trying too hard, but yet I was totally riveted from beginning to end. There is a kind and intelligent heart at the center of this film and story, and an awesome, subtle and very cool sense of humor. The director must know that it is the characters in a film that make it memorable and touching. Every single character in the film is special! It is all great natural acting and you get to see Cindy Lauper and hear a beautiful new song from her too.

Great movie deserving of all its film festival success. The fantastic score immediately pulls the viewer in, and the comic premise of the plot seamlessly moves into a touching (but not overly sentimental) last act. Definitely worth seeing.

Great film, definitely worth checking out,
This review is from: Here & There (DVD)
If you're looking for a comedy or drama with a great script and great acting, look no further. This is the kind of movie that's become too rare these days, one with a wry sense of humor, a hard earned humanism, and a delicate touch. While it's full of laughs and dramatic moments, this film also finds time to enjoy the odder moments in life. It never forgets to satisfy in the story department and keeps the narrative moving at a good pace.
Here and There will definitely please anyone in need of a seriously good movie sans Na'vi. |
