REAL jazz guitar, June 3, 2004
This review is from: Here and There (Audio CD)
This outstanding CD will appeal to anyone who loves the work of Joe Pass, Jim Hall, Rene Thomas and Martin Taylor. A young Dutchman with four CD's to his credit, this debut CD for the distinguished Dutch jazz label Criss Cross is his best. It finds him in the company of two different groups, one a quartet with piano, the other a trio. Of the ten tunes represented only one is original, the others are lesser known but SUBSTANTIAL tunes from composers as gifted and diverse as Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Lee Konitz and Thelonious Monk. This is one of the best "straight" jazz guitar albums to come out in quite some time.

Beautiful, old-school Jazz, September 24, 2009
This review is from: Here and There (Audio CD)
I love this album. Jesse van Ruller plays beautiful, melodic lines. This album is a great antidote to the dissonant directions in Jazz. The rhythm section is top notch with two of my favorite drummers: Joe Farnsworth and Willie Jones III. The only criticism is that the arrangements could be more interesting.
