WORST Book about Jayne Mansfield,
By Michelle De Ville (Laurentians,Quebec) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Here They Are Jayne Mansfield (Paperback)
I have been a fan of Jayne Mansfield since 1977.
I found this book last year, from the same publisher, and of ALL the books that I ever read about Jayne (or any other actress,or actor) this one is the VERY WORST.Mispells everywhere, errors;I was wondering if the book was even read before being printed..Just awful.. Let's talk about the ''claims'' of Raymond Strait: The fact they almost got married..You wish !!!.Also he talks about Jayne's parenting skills as nil.I have problems believing this. Some of the pictures provided are not only of very poor quality, but also show wrong years for them. This book was obviously written to make a fast buck, and published by a 'not-too-picky' publisher. Also the tone of the book indicates a kind of axe to grind, that i found distasteful. Conclusion:If you wish to know more about Jayne, get a copy of Martha Saxton (Jayne Mansfield and the American Fifties),or even May Mann's book, because Mr Strait's book is rubbish

I have loved Miss Mansfield for years and this is the first book that really tells her story. I have heard rumors about her crazy life and this book delivers. A must read for all Jayne fans.

I have to disagree with Michelle DeVille's 1-star review. First, Martha Saxton's book (which Michelle DeVille highly recommends on Jayne Mansfield) is written in feminist platitudes that don't ring true about Mansfield the woman. Saxton writes in theories, not facts. This would be nice for a freshman undergraduate paper but it still wouldn't allow you to understand who Jayne Mansfield was as a woman.
Strait, on the other hand, knew Jayne Mansfield for ten years and his book is a memoir. Although he does not list his sources, his claims can be substantiated elsewhere by other highly credible authors. Every book has typos; you just have to deal with it. If you really don't want to know who Mansfield was then I recommend you read Saxton's book. If you want to get a glimpse at who the real woman was then read Strait's book. It's enjoyable, funny, tender-hearted and no, Michelle, there is no axe to grind. |
