Editorial Reviews

Through all the years of the band's existence (and non-existence) nary a soul would have anticipated the 2007 release of this fifth studio album by the pioneering British punk rock band. Amazingly, the members (all original, plus Darryl Smith, who enlisted in 1992) are still quite close and decided the time had come to issue new studio material, their first in more than a decade. All are proud of the results and as their website states, 'may well be the best thing that we have ever done.' Captain Oi 14 tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oi Ageing Gracefully, December 13, 2008
This review is from: Here We Stand (Audio CD)
By far the most consistent of any Oi band, Cock Sparrer have never gone the punk dinner-theatre route, hacking out increasingly bored versions of old glories in an endless, grinding tour (cf. Sham 69, 999, now the Buzzcocks, sadly...). Instead, they tour when they feel like it, record a new album every decade or so when they have some new songs -- which all sound like the old songs -- and sit around watching footy the rest of the time. The old power chords and guitar runs are present and correct here, the melodies a touch less riveting than in the Shock Troops heyday, but a damn sight better than Two Monkeys or the weaker bits of Runnin' Riot. It's nice to see a band making music that has the energy and sound of classic punk, yet dealing with the pressing reality of getting old and fat (and doing it without art-ing up or pretending to be anything other than what they've always been: pleasantly insightful and surprisingly self-reflective working class men in Fred Perry and Doc Martens). This disc is well worth having, a fine change of pace from their classic material -- and that's more than you can say for anything recent by any of their contemporaries.

4.0 out of 5 stars cock sparrer here we stand, December 23, 2007
This review is from: Here We Stand (Audio CD)
finally a new cock sparrer album very much long awaited. having everything including their true grit on vinyl and upto the 90's releases of guilty as charged and two monkeys i couldnt wait to get my hands on this. to my dismay it wasnt as good as their past releases. by all means it is a good album, but lacking in some way im not sure of. i received this album 2 days ago and had a go at it several times, but i just cant get into it, which is a disappointment being one of my all time favorite bands. i think that lars fredriksen should stay out of mixing and producing of our favorite bands. like he did with the business. overall i give this a 4 star review, sorry boys i love your music but this is lacking that old cock sparrer stamp on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Sparrer Album Ever, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Here We Stand (Audio CD)
A new Cock Sparrer CD is here after ten long years, and not only does it sound great, it tips well and can be applied directly to warts. I hesitate calling them the first Oi band as it's not my fight, and I mostly agree with the assessment Sparrer and others were proto-Oi bands. Sparrer have been going at it for thirty odd years, tower over their peers as musicians, and in Here We Stand have recorded the best album of their career.

The only complaint I have with Here We Stand is how the tracks were ordered (I just got word the American release will address this issue). Sparrer deliver three types of songs: thoughtful laments on what once was and is either no more or has gone wrong, funny tales of corner pub numbnuttery, and positive anthems of pride. They write catchy tunes in their sleep, as do The Buzzcocks. You somehow expect more than that from Cock Sparrer. I graded eight of the fourteen tracks eight. Here We Stand is front-loaded with eights that hit similar themes. The best tracks, and many of their best don't take themselves seriously, don't kick in until the middle. The best are "Spirit Of '76", "Last Orders", "Suicide Girls", "Sussed", "Don't Stop", "Despite All This" and "Too Late".

With Cock Sparrer you can always rely on simple melodies improved upon to the point of excellence, rollicking bass guitar, soaring guitar chords and clever single note progressions, well-written humor, great sing-alongs, and they do some of their best work during what's esoterically known at The Truck Driver's Gear Change.

Cock Sparrer lyrics are the best. From "Last Orders": "Four pints of lager later things went from bad to worse/ She came back from the toilet, caught me going through her purse/ She said forget the taxi, you're gonna need a hearse/ There's time for one last round// One tequila, two tequila, three tequila four/ I knew I wasn't drunk I had a good grip on the floor/ I puckered up to kiss her but she punched me in the jaw/ Time for one last round". From "Suicide Girls": "For a lifetime or a single night/ You might get into her world/ That'd be strictly by invite/ She's with the Suicide Girls// Just don't try to take her away/ You'll be dead before you fail// Get in the back seat and know your place/ She's with the Suicide Girls."

Here We Stand is the best effort so far from the best Oi band the universe has burped up so far. You can still be a punk and not like Here We Stand, but you'd be a part-time punk at best.
