Libby York: A fine singer presents fine music,
By Steve Emerine (Tucson, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Here With You (Audio CD)
I liked Libby York's debut CD, "Blue Gardenia," when it came out in 1998, but her latest album is in a class by itself. The CD title comes from the Peggy Lee hit, "I Love Being Here With You." Other tunes include ""For All We Know," "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" (with cornetist Warren Vache' joining York on the vocal), "Azure Te," "A Beautiful Friendship," and the haunting "Flamingo." Guitarist Howard Alden does double duty, also providing the arrangements for the 11 tunes. Vache' does his usual great job, and Russell Malone contributes his guitar excellence on three numbers that will remind you of the classic Ella Fitzgerald-Joe Pass albums for Pablo. Jon Burr on bass and Vanderlei Pereira on drums and percussion round out the cast. But there's no question the star of "Here With You" is Libby York, a polished, confident and excellent singer who deserves a place among today's top female jazz vocalists. I was so impressed with this CD that I've since bought her second album, "Sunday in New York," to complete my set of her recordings.
