Important Collection, January 22, 2006
This review is from: Here comes the lady (Hardcover)
This collection of short stories by Shiel is an extremely important gathering. The stories display a full spectrum of the author's topical interests while also showing him at his most virtuostic in the use of language, style and imagination. One of the masters of the fantastic, the decadent and stylistic, much of Shiel will be remembered well after other contemporaries are forgotten. It should be acknowledged that the use of a framing device in an attempt to relate these stories just does not work well, and the collection would have been better off without it. Nevertheless, here is Shiel at once at his most pedestrian and his most fevered romantic and fantastic.
