Book Description

June 7, 2011 Hereafter

Can there truly be love after death?

Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.

Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.

Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, Hereafter is a sensation you won't want to miss.

More About the Author

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Tara Hudson graduated with a degree in law, mostly because she believed all the horror stories about English majors and their careers in the food-service industry. Luckily, she soon remembered how much she loved telling ghost stories, particularly to her girlfriends who liked visiting abandoned cemeteries as much as she did. Tara currently lives in Oklahoma with her husband, son, and a menagerie of ill-behaved pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Writing for Debut Author June 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Hereafter, by Tara Hudson, is another breakthrough novel in that growing class of "Young (at heart?) Adult" stories. Extremely well written. A very quick read. Your teen girl will love it. Your wife will probably love it, as well.

Synopsis (no spoilers):

Amelia is dead. Not in that cool "I'm dead, so now I'm stronger, faster, and sexier with super powers" vampire way. She's dead in that sucky "I can't remember anything about my life, can't affect anything in the world, wake up in the same place every time" Groundhog Day kinda way. But that all changes when, you guessed it, she meets a boy. Not just any old regular teenage male, but The Boy.

Joshua, is the popular, good-looking nice guy that just happens to drive his car of the same bridge, into the same river, where Amelia perished. After his brief crossover into the land incorporeal, Joshua returns to life and thanks to some family "seer" blood, can now, well, "see" Amelia. The two begin to interact which, with no one being able to view Amelia, leads to some interesting high school hijinx.

Of course, the story isn't complete without an opposing suitor for Amelia's attentions. Enter Eli, a rock'n'roll ghost who 'recruits' other recently departed souls into a colorless, dreary afterlife. He has some power over these wraiths granted to him from his employers. You know what they say. It's better to reign in colorless, dreary afterlife than to serve in, well ... Eli wants a junior-partner/love-interest and thinks Amelia will fit the job. Unlike other stories in the genre, Amelia isn't torn in her love between the two. In fact, she is clearly only interested in one person, and it ain't Eli.

You throw in some supporting cast including a spunky younger sister and a ghost-exocising witch of a grandmother and the stage is set. Amelia has to figure out who she is, what she can do, and also sort out her feelings for the one person she can't have. Or can she?

Notes:

The writing style is very good. Tara Hudson does have a gift for story telling. Of course, in this tale, you do have that "just add water Insta-Love" but that is how it works for some people. Sometimes love takes time to mature and sometimes is jumps out and attacks like a ninja. Either way, the main audience for this book are young adults, so love that happens in an instant, in a heartbeat, is proper.

The cover art is absolutely amazing. Perfect for the mood of the novel. Good choice publisher.

If you like other supernatural/fantasy young adult novels, you will absolutely enjoy this book. Kudos to the author.

About Me:

First of all, I'm a married male in his 30's that has never written a book, nor desired to write a book.

I'm a reader. No ties to the publishing industry. I don't have a blog or twitter account. I just like to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hereafter June 23, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I felt there was something missing in this book. It was the typical boy meet girl, girl's a ghost and now they have to figure out how that's going to work. Well, I guess that's not so typical but I felt like that was the whole plot line. I also lacked the emotional connection to the characters that makes the story memorable. It didn't win a place in my heart.

My favorite parts of the story were the fact that she only knew her name and nothing else and her trying to figure out her life and how she died. I'm really a sucker for a good mystery so I was very intrigued when different aspects of her life started to be revealed.

Of course, there was a bad guy, Eli, and he was the spirit who was charged with watching over the river and meadow area where Amelia died. He wasn't all that scary and I expected Amelia to win out in the end now matter what happened. I didn't really worry for her like I have for other characters in stories I've read before. When I read this type of book, I want to be sitting on the edge of my seat, unable to anticipate the next move or the next scene. But I didn't feel that anxiousness in this book.

Even though the story line was really good and very interesting, I just didn't feel the chemistry between the two main characters; I couldn't get a solid sense of their feelings. Although I was left unsatisfied, I was intrigued enough to continue reading the series if it should continue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book! June 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Now this is one book that totally blew me off my feet! The plot! OMG!, the plot. It had me hooked from the very first page! I like that this book has very unique idea. The way it was played out was good. I enjoyed learning and going along with the characters as they discovered the past that they have forgotten.

The characters in this book I loved. I like how the main character was lost. It made the story much more juicier cause you, as the reader, get to experience everything as the first just like her. Amelia is so strong and different. I even enjoyed her willingness to finds things out. After sitting out for a while, she wanted answers!!

The love interest in the book is what makes this book rock. It like a love that is forbidden and somewhat impossible. I like how well they connected with each other from the first time that they meant. It seemed as though they had a long history with each other. You knew they were meant to be together. The obstacles they went through were the same as any other couple but still a little much harder. I can only hope that they can have a future together.

Hereafter is a great, haunting book with a love that is forbidden and worth fighting for. Her plot twists were amazing as well as the details going into the book. The places, feelings, and characters you can all feel and see in your head. This is one book you don't want to miss reading!
